Job Description

The Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor or an Associate Professor with tenure level to begin August 10, 2023.

We seek a candidate with a research focus in criminology broadly defined. While areas of specialization are open, preference will be given to those who work in the area of cybercriminology / digital criminology. Teaching will include a variety of criminology courses at the graduate and undergraduate level.

The Department of Sociology houses the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention and the newly created Cybercriminology Lab. While areas of research and teaching within criminology are open, we are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the growth and development of the Cybercriminology Lab. We are particularly interested in candidates who utilize advanced and/or innovative data methodologies related to collecting, managing, and interpreting digital data (i.e. data generated across digital platforms, big data, and/or AI data).

The Department of Sociology is recognized for excellence in interdisciplinary research, and we encourage scholars with interest in working with interdisciplinary teams. The department’s faculty have established relations with colleagues in the School of Public and International Affairs, Center for Public Administration and Policy, Computer Science, Statistics, and Science and Technology Studies (STS), and programs in the National Capital Region.
The department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in Sociology. Graduate students can concentrate in Women’s and Gender Studies or Africana Studies. A graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies is also offered.

The Department of Sociology plays a central role in the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies (ATS), a new interdisciplinary set of programs including Women’s and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, and American Indian Studies. The ATS is also home to minors in the fields of Asian American Studies, Disability Studies, Latino/a/x Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Food Studies and Animal Studies.
