The Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies (DPLS) at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor beginning August 2023. The individual occupying this position will join the four current faculty members as part of an interdisciplinary team committed to supporting our students and to maintaining the international prominence of the DPLS. The program is designed for scholars pursuing a doctoral degree (PhD) in leadership studies that includes working professionals from a variety of careers and fields that include but are not limited to teachers and school administrators, consultants, health care, social services, higher education, ministry, business, military, engineering, and government. The program is interdisciplinary and designed to develop scholarship in leadership studies and professional dispositions and competencies as a leader while encouraging self-reflection and strengthening a dedication to service of others. Required Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in Leadership Studies or discipline related to leadership studies.
  2. Evidence of active scholarship and interests in leadership studies or closely related fields.
  3. Evidence of teaching competence in a variety of modalities.
  4. Evidence of research advising at the graduate level.
  5. Evidence of strong interest in social justice, diversity, and/or globalization.
  6. Willingness to embrace the Mission of Gonzaga University and Ignatian Pedagogy.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated commitment to students and student success.
  2. Demonstrated evidence with graduate teaching and dissertation advising.
  3. Ability mentoring and supporting students with diverse experiences, backgrounds and identities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Teach content courses in the following areas:

a) leadership theory and organizational theory

b) cross-cultural and critical approaches to leadership theory such as gender-based leadership, feminist theory, critical race theory or the like.

In addition to the areas above, faculty members may be asked to teach courses in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Philosophy and ethics of leadership,
  2. Organizational theory, development, and change,
  3. Communication and leadership,
  4. Civic leadership/community activism or community development, and/or
  5. Social justice, diversity, and/or critical race theory as they relate to leadership
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda focused on topics relevant to the program.  Be involved in or establish suitable involvement with professional organizations as well as pursue publication in leadership studies-related fields.
  • Have sufficient appreciation for and background to chair qualitative as well as quantitative dissertations. Experience with qualitative and quantitative methodologies (including mixed and theoretical methods as well as social network analysis) is desirable.
  • Advise students in the doctoral program as well as chair and serve on dissertation committees.
  • Be actively engaged in university and community service activities at the university, school, and department levels.

  4. A short (500 words or less) description of a current research project or research idea. Please include the purpose, intent of impact, and any collaborators and your role within the project.  

Additional Material: At the appropriate time, finalists for the positions may be requested to provide in .pdf format: a) a course syllabus, b) a copy of one recent journal article or other appropriate example of research and scholarship activity, and (if possible), c) quantitative and qualitative evaluations by students, preferably from graduate level courses.
