POSITION PURPOSE:

Within the Division of University Advancement (UA), the Office of Marketing and Communications promotes the mission of CSU Bakersfield by advancing and protecting the CSUB brand, and informing and inspiring the community through storytelling. The office drives engagement between the university and key target audiences in this region and beyond and serves as the leading on-campus expert in marketing and communications.

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for managing University Communications, external communications efforts, overseeing the University's marketing and branding strategies, as well as successfully leading and managing a team of Marketing & Communication staff.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • External Communications
  • Serve as primary contact for content generation and/or content review for all UA departments in an effort to support the work of University Advancement.
  • Serve as editor of the University's monthly newsletter.
  • Provide strategic direction and supervision to MarCom staff and supervise the editorial work of MarCom staff to ensure that assignments and work align consistently with University strategic priorities.
  • Serve as chair of the CSUB Campus Communicators Group.
  • Develop and distribute news releases and feature stories about University events, programs, and initiatives and work with the Public Information Officer to ensure their distribution to the media and other stakeholders.
  • Marketing and Branding
  • Consult regularly and work closely with the Vice President for University Advancement to ensure that all communications and publications adhere to strategic themes and guidelines and present a seamless image of the University.
  • Oversee the MarCom team's work to develop brand guidance, ensure campus-wide brand coordination, and develop a quality-control system to ensure internal/external communications cohere to the University's brand
  • Develop brand messaging, brand expression and brand standardization strategies
  • Maintain and serve as contact for the University's Visual Identify Guide and editorial standards, including approval of logo use.
  • Oversee the University's digital and social media strategy and outreach using email marketing, web campaigns, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and other emerging platforms.
  • Marketing and Communication Team Oversight
  • Supervise and manage Marketing & Communication staff through determining workload balance, establishing performance goals, performance management, and encouraging the development, retention, and high level of moral within department
  • Hire, evaluate, train, grow, and discipline staff as necessary
  • Participation on University Committees
  • Represent University Advancement and/or Marketing and Communications on a wide range of committees, including:
    • Chair of the Campus Communicators Group
    • Graduation Initiative Task Force
    • Food and Housing Security Committee
    • Commencement Committee
    • Behavioral Assessment Response Team
    • Foundation Board Community Engagement and Advocacy Committee
  • Disaster Service Worker
  • All MPP employees are considered Disaster Service Workers, (CA Gov. Code Section 3100), and are required to attend trainings and possibly hold a position in the CSUB Emergency Operations Center (EOC), as assigned.

  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE –
      • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field (attach a copy of degree/transcripts to employment application).
      • Five years of recent (within five years), increasingly responsible professional experience in communications, including three years supervisory experience demonstrating the capacity to plan, implement, direct, and coordinate a communications program.
      • A combination of education and directly related experience will be considered.

    LICENSES –
      • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
      • Ability to develop, plan and execute communication plans including research, identification of objectives, development of themes and concepts, and oversight creation of content and communication materials.
      • Ability to market and position the University to meet strategic and long-term objectives.
      • Ability to use considerable judgment and discretion in developing strategic plans and interpreting policies.
      • Appreciable ingenuity to conceive of marketing strategies and develop communication concepts, ideas and campaigns.
      • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication and/or marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote and position the University.
      • Expert knowledge of University communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.
      • Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective.
      • Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media.
      • Understanding of media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques.
      • Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to University officials and external outlets.
      • Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns.
      • Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques.
      • Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents.
      • Expert writing and editorial skills.
      • Demonstrated organizational skills.
      • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
      • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
      • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
      • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
      • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
      • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
      • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
      • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
      • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
      • Master's degree in a related field and experience in institutional marketing, corporate communications, or agency environment.
      • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment.
      • Experience in the higher education Marketing and Communications realm.
      • Experience with Raiser's Edge donor records database system.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.

    BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
