Position Summary

This individual is a semi-autonomous employee of Campus Parking Services and works under parameters established by policies, procedures, rules and regulations. The person in this position is assigned to monitor and enforce parking rules and regulations in specified parking zones, as well as respond to varied parking service assignments provided by the Campus Parking Services’ office, the public safety dispatch center, and/or immediate supervisor. Flexibility is critical when unexpected situations occur that need immediate resolution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of university parking rules and regulations.
  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of campus geography including the names and locations of all University parking lots, streets and buildings.
  • Possesses a general knowledge of common student and visitor destinations. This individual must have the capacity to transfer his or her geographic knowledge into easily understood verbal directions to assist customers.
  • Respects and maintains sensitive nature of department’s activities and files.
  • Responsible for working cash funds which are of value.
  • Uses due diligence in handling university assets so that reasonable protection is always provided to those assets.
  • Possesses the ability to promote exceptional relationships with the University community.
  • Interacts with students, faculty, staff, and visitors throughout the course of their daily activities.
  • Interacts with other parking personnel to coordinate specific parking conditions and situations.
  • Communicates to diffuse potential volatile situations caused by parking policy enforcement.
  • Uses good judgement under stress and follows oral/written instructions.
  • Reads, understands, interprets and applies the appropriate tests, maps and documents that provide the information necessary to develop the knowledge and skills mentioned above.
  • Depending on the work to be accomplished and available manpower, this position will be assigned to one or more specific activities on a daily basis and share work responsibilities with other service area employees.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Possession of a valid and current State of Illinois driver’s license.
  3. No record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.

Physical demands/requirements

Physical Requirements: Parking Service Agents may be required to perform job related functions for as long as twelve (12) hours with limited rest periods. These functions include but are not limited to the following:
1. Walking
2. Standing
3. Directing traffic
4. Writing parking citations with paper and pen
5. Carrying job related items (i.e. handheld ticketing equipment, tickets, cameras, envelopes…etc)
6. Sitting in the parking service vehicle or office.
7. Driving a university vehicle.

Work Environment: Parking Service Agents work in a variety of conditions. They may have to walk parking lots in sub-zero conditions or temperatures above 90 degrees with exposure to seasonal precipitation and/or wind. Parking Service Agents are issued uniforms that must be worn in a manner consistent with departmental policy regardless of climatic conditions.

Exam Details:
  • The Civil Service examination for this classification is a Credentials Assessment and is based on your application materials as submitted for this posting. A Credential Assessment is a rating by the Human Resources Office of an applicant’s/employee’s education, experience, and special credentials/qualifications (licenses, etc.).
