Location: Brooklyn, NY

Description:
Pratt Institute seeks a full-time Digital Technician to support the School of Design's Production Labs, located on Pratt's Brooklyn Campus.

Reporting to the Director of Production Labs, the Digital Technician is a highly motivated educator with excellent communication, technical, and organizational skills, expertise operating digital fabrication machinery and software, and some professional design experience. Overseeing a range of digital fabrication resources, the Digital Technician will manage the day-to-day operations of the School of Design's CNC Lab, while also partnering with the Lead Digital Technician to support Laser Lab and 3D printing operations.

As a member of the School of Design's Production Labs, the Digital Technician will join an interdisciplinary team of design educators committed to fostering a safe, creative, and robust culture of making, and provide students with practical technical training that will guide their design practice in and beyond their time at Pratt.

On a typical day you will:
  • Oversee the operation, set-up, inspection, and maintenance of equipment in the CNC Lab.
  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of training materials, procedures, services, to be used by student employees, student users, and faculty working in the CNC lab.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student employees to program and operate CNC equipment, assigning tasks during shifts.
  • Establish routine cleaning, maintenance, and safety protocols, maintaining optimal working conditions and supplies inventory.
  • Lead workshops, demonstrations, orientations, and tours as needed.


This is an OPEIU Local 153 Technical Position. The salary range for this position is $51,843 - $51,843 + generous benefits.


Qualifications:
Education: BA or Industrial Design, Master's degree in relevant field of study or equivalent is preferred.

Experience: 3 years of previous experience instructing in a makerspace or FabLab environment, and/or working with students in a supervisory capacity.

Skills:
  • Previous experience operating CNC machinery.
  • Strong digital design skills, and fluency with at least some of the following software: AutoCAD, Rhino, Solidworks, Adobe Suite, Vectric, V-carve, Aspire, RhinoCAM or WinCNC.
  • Experience assembling, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting machinery.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings, contribute research, and make presentations.
  • Hands-on, highly creative problem solver, with strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently, while also working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Professional, courteous, and tactful, especially while under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen to and communicate effectively with a diverse population of stakeholders.

Other: Ability to work non-traditional schedules that may include nights and weekends, in addition to schedule shifts with semester changes.
