Overview

The Network Specialist 2 serves as a knowledge expert on fiber, cat6 and coax media and is responsible for installing and maintaining the University cable infrastructure. The network specialist plans and completes all stages of the cable installation life cycle, including assessment, materials selection, infrastructure design, performance and quality assurance, and updating the master database.

This position is a benefits-eligible term appointment that ends June 30, 2024.



Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the complete installation life cycle of all cable within the University infrastructure, which includes needs assessment, cable infrastructure/blueprint analysis, termination, testing, selection and installation of firestop solutions, master database updates, and project status updates and communications
  • Install cabling to support data, voice, cable TV, WiFi, DAS, and keyless lock systems (e.g. fiber, cat6, coax)
  • Assess job requests to ensure job orders align with customer expectations and determine the appropriate cable and associated hardware for jobs
  • Review the master cabling infrastructure (NetAtlas), database, and drawings to understand the current state of the architecture; create and draft the cable path for the new cable system installation; and submit map updates to the network GIS administrator
  • Terminate cables and use testing equipment to ensure the correct speed and operation of all cables
  • Determine and then install the appropriate firestop solution at penetration sites, and ensure that all requirements are met and the firestop is code compliant
  • Update the NetAtlas database following cable installation and cable activation steps; make certain that database maintenance is accurate and timely
  • Close IT Service Management job tickets and inform customers that work is complete unplug
  • Disconnect and reconnect computer equipment during a renovation or office move, when needed
  • Must be willing and available to work on special projects that require overtime and/or weekend work


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in cable installation and configuration
  • Solid understanding of cable infrastructure
  • Familiarity with various cable media (e.g. fiber, cat6, coax)
  • Knowledge of and ability to use cable testers
  • Knowledge of cable TV technology, including amplifiers and headend equipment
  • Basic understanding of network equipment, including switches and routers
  • Knowledge of wireless technology
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks at the same time, while remaining attentive to details; ability to work with a high level of accuracy and precision with consistency
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse customer base, including faculty and staff with varying levels of technical skill, to assess needs and ensure the job request is the appropriate solution for achieving the desired goal
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment and communicate well with colleagues in the field
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Proficient in the use of power tools
  • Knowledge of computing technology; ability to disconnect and reconnect computers in new locations
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work effectively in a range of environmental and temperature conditions
  • Ability to work in small and confined spaces
  • Knowledge of Princeton’s network database
  • Education: High School Diploma
Preferred Qualifications

  • Cat6 technology and fiber optic technology certification
  • Siemons Cabling certification
  • Corning Fiber Optic certification
  • Familiarity with Hilti products
