Job Description

Reporting to the University Chemical Hygiene Officer, the Compliance Safety Officer provides professional assistance to the Virginia Tech Environmental Health and Safety Office in monitoring and coordinating a comprehensive health and safety program with the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC operations following federal, state, local, and granting agencies requirements. The position ensures safe laboratory operations through education and the annual inspection process. The position is responsible for administering the lab safety, chemical waste, biohazardous waste program, fume hood, and safety shower programs, including interpretation of regulations and implementation of programs. They will assist in the use of the Safety Management System. Review hazards/waste collection needs of new spaces.

Responsible for ensuring training is accessible and complete, including visiting students, faculty, and volunteers. Assist with information dissemination on various issues after collaborating with subject matter experts at Environmental Health and Safety.

Required Qualifications

An advanced degree with an emphasis in science or engineering or training and experience equivalent to an advanced degree. Working knowledge of the Laboratory Safety Standard, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations; Demonstrated effective communication skills; Ability to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds; Good knowledge of computers and software (such as data entry/recording, word processing, etc.); Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills. Considerable experience with a wide variety of multidisciplinary labs.

Preferred Qualifications

Safety experience in an academic environment. Knowledge and experience with Biosafety. Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus. Chemical Hygiene Officer certification.

Additional Information

Must be able to move and handle up to 50 pounds unassisted safely. Must be able to walk/stand for long periods. Must be able to travel to work sites and, during site visits, may stand, lift, reach, push/pull, walk, climb, stoop, and bend. The work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following established safety precautions. Ability to use PPE (including wearing a respirator) as required per safety procedures. Repetitive movement through the use of computer/keyboarding. Must have a criminal background check. Must have a driver's license check. Other (Describe Below): Must participate in the university medical surveillance program. May have to work additional hours or modify the schedule to meet the department's needs. On occasion, may have off-campus travel that may require an overnight stay.

The position location will be 85% Roanoke campus, 10% the main Blacksburg campus, and 5% Children's National Hospital.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
