Job Description Summary

The Reading Supervisors are highly skilled teachers of literacy with many years of teaching experience. They are assigned approximately 3-5 Chapman tutors to observe each week during tutoring sessions from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Tutoring may take place on Chapman University, local school site, or remotely. The Reading Supervisors will:
  • Review the tutors’ lesson plans.
  • Note whether the Common Core State Standards have been include
  • Observe the tutors’ lessons.
  • Record observations.
  • Provide written comments with positive and constructive suggestions for further tutoring
  • Meet briefly with all Reading Supervisors and Course Instructor for any overall class’ needs
  • Debrief with small group of Chapman teachers. At the end of each session, the Reading Supervisor meets with the group of assigned Chapman tutors observed.
  • Chapman tutors share their experiences with each other, the Reading Supervisors comment on what was observed, offering suggestions and recommendations, modeling student-responsive instruction, and offering positive support.
Responsibilities
  • Observe the tutor’s lesson (note whether Common Core and other standards are included), review tutor’s lesson plan and record comments on lesson observations.
  • Provide written feedback with positive and constructive suggestions for future tutoring.
  • Debrief with Chapman-assigned tutors at the end of each tutoring session. Comment on overall tutoring, offering suggestions and recommendations, and offering positive support.
  • Meet before and mid-way through tutoring program with all Reading Supervisors and course instructor for any overall class needs.
  • Attend Literacy Celebration and interact with families and tutoring dyads in support. Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Multiple subjects, single subject and/or education specialist credential.
  • Experienced and credentialed classroom teacher who is currently teaching or who has taught language arts to elementary, middle-school, or high school students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to furthering equity, diversity, and the improvement of public education.
  • Experience in inclusive education and/or differentiated instruction.
  • Strong commitment to student learning, quality teaching, and academic excellence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using written and oral communication skills and use effective, positive interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of technology.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of research-based literacy teaching practices
  • Knowledge and experience in literacy intervention teaching practices
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Responsive Teaching in literacy instruction.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Different work shifts
Standard hours of the university are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

4-6:30 p.m. one day per week
(The selected weekday is dependent on the scheduling of Teacher Education program’s reading methods course which is typically on Tuesdays or Thursdays)
