The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking exceptional, board-certified palliative medicine physicians to join the Department of Internal Medicine Palliative Care Section as a Clinician-Educator and Hospice Medical Director.

JOB SUMMARY

The Clinician Educator will primarily be responsible for care delivery and education of trainees in meeting the goals of Dell Medical School to provide care to vulnerable community members with serious illness. This position will include direct patient care, precepting students and trainees in the care environment, and participation in scholarly work that supports faculty and program development. This will account for approximately 80% of the faculty's time. The remaining 20% will be spent providing hospice medical director services to one of our partner hospice organizations: Compassus Hospice.

About the Department

The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 129 faculty and 68 residents. The Department is comprised of 11 Divisions, and collaborates closely with other Departments in the School of Medicine and across the UT Austin Campus. The Division of Palliative Care is comprised of 12 faculty and houses the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. We are partnered with a number of care delivery organizations in the Austin /Travis County community, including the Seton-Ascension system. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for our residents.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree with Board Certification (or Board Eligibility if within 2 years of residency) in a primary specialty and palliative medicine sub-specialty.
  • Unrestricted licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas.
  • Strong clinical teaching skills.
  • Eligible for appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor.
  • Spanish language fluency appreciated, not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interprofessional team.
  • Ability to interact with peers, executives, employees, and consultants in a manner that represents the Dell Medical School positively.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making, and importantly clinical judgment.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge and experiences in a timely manner.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and projects and to prioritize.
  • Plan, promote, demonstrate, recommend and coordinate high standards of evidence-based medical practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
