Job Summary
The Heat Plant Superintendent is a working management role and is responsible for directing and supervising the operations and maintenance of the campus central heating and cooling plant as well as equipment at select satellite facilities. The position has direct supervision of plant operators and oversight of contracted service provider staff as well as interfacing with various campus and State departments working to operate, maintain, and renovate the plant. The plant equipment includes high pressure boilers and large capacity chillers along with associated mechanical and electrical equipment

As a full-time staff, the incumbent will earn 176 hours of vacation per fiscal year and granted 176 hours (22 days) of initial entitlement sick leave available for use during the first 18 months of employment (will earn 96 hours (12 days) of sick leave per fiscal year after the initial entitlement period). These numbers are prorated for appointment percentage. Employees will also be granted 36 hours (4.5 days) of personal holiday hours per year and nine legal paid holidays.

The starting salary for this role will be between $80,000 and $90,000 per year, but the final salary offer will be contingent upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities demonstrated throughout the selection process.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this vacancy must:
  • Possess and maintain a minimum of a Third Class High Pressure Boiler Operator License administered by a nationally recognized certification organization such as ASOPE or NIULPE
  • Minimum of five years of operating and maintenance experience within a central heating and cooling plant or closely related process plant
  • Experience directly supervising maintenance or operations employees
  • Proficiency with office applications including email, spreadsheets, word processing, and team meetings
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)


Preferred Qualifications
Highly qualified candidates will also have:
  • Associate Degree in Boiler Operation or Power Engineering or closely related field
  • Chief, First Class, or Second Class Operating License (Facility, Stationary Engineer, or Power Plant) administered by a nationally recognized organization (ASOPE or NIULPE).
  • Proficiency in writing requests for proposal for service work and interpreting and evaluating same
  • Experience in developing and writing plant operational procedures
  • Familiarity with PLC controls
  • Evidence of experience with managing annual operating budgets
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software tools
  • Demonstrated success with conflict resolution and elevating organizational standards of performance.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles of thermal utilities, HVAC, and thermodynamics of steam production and mechanical refrigeration
