Department Summary

The Accounting Services department's main function is reviewing, analyzing and recording the financial data for the University. We are responsible for monthly and year-end closing of accounting records and preparing this information for reporting to the CSU Chancellor's Office and various state agencies. In addition, we are proud to service the University departments by providing guidance and training as needed.

Job Summary

The Financial Reporting Lead will take a lead role in the preparation of University's GAAP financial audit and tax reporting, various advanced accounting projects/implementations, and month-end and fiscal year-end closing processes. In addition, this position will maintain Chart of Accounts and examine financial reports for conformance with GAAP and University/Auxiliaries' policies and procedures.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Direct responsibility in the preparation of the University's financial reporting to the State Controller's Office, Chancellor's Office, and other outside entities. The incumbent runs advanced processes and creates schedules/reconciliations required by annual audit or upcoming GASB/FASB reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the University's chart of accounts for all business units (campus and Auxiliaries). The incumbent will provide recommendations and resolve errors associated with legal edits to make sure the COA follows the guidance from Chancellor's Office for year-end close and systemwide consolidation.
  • Lead GASB/FASB standards implementations for campus and Auxiliaries, as well as other accounting projects as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state tax rules and regulations, and promoting awareness of tax issues within the University including the review of federal and state tax issues, new laws and regulations, and current court outcomes.
  • Provide lead work direction to the Reporting and Tax unit, may provide input to the employee performance evaluation for the GAAP accountant. This position works with other staff members assisting, guiding, training, and resolving accounting issues based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Probationary position

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GASB/FASB standards.
  • Knowledge of statistical and mathematical presentation of data.
  • Knowledge of advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems, and/or other types of records management systems.
  • General knowledge of governmental accounting and internal control methods and related laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to prepare complex financial statements and reports; understand and interpret laws and rules; communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying complex and technical professional accounting information to non-accountants.
  • This position will analyze transactions from various systems and processes with the emphasis on improved efficiency. Other abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position are:

Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Experience: Equivalent to five years of professional level accounting experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Higher ed or CSU accounting and reporting experience.
  • Experience with financial system, such as PeopleSoft.
  • Experience in preparing complex reconciliation or year-end audit reports

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,666 - $7,000 per month

Classification Salary Range: $5,242 - $10,116 per month
