Director, Total Rewards - (STA011372)



Directs the planning, design, implementation and administration of all University of Houston Total Reward programs. Compensation duties include but are not limited to development of Compensation strategy and tools; job descriptions, job evaluations, performance management system, salary administration, compensation philosophy, policy and administrative procedures, incentive plans, and compensation surveys. Benefits duties include but are not limited to development of benefits strategy, administration of the State funded benefit plans (life, medical, disability), and administration of the optional retirement plans, wellness programs and any benefit plans not included in the State Benefit package, development and administration of leave policies. In addition, this job has responsibility for ensuring that the university complies with state and federal laws relating to Compensation and Benefits administration.

  1. Designs and implements Total Reward strategies for the University of Houston.
  2. Ensures the design, communication, education, and implementation of compensation and benefits programs meet the needs of the employee population.
  3. Works to ensure that the University of Houston maintains its strategic objectives and competitive place in the market place.
  4. Directs the efforts of Compensation and Benefits staff to develop appropriate policies and effective, efficient administrative procedures that will deliver compensation and benefit programs to attract, manage and retain the most qualified employees.
  5. Assists the Executive Director in the strategic initiatives of Total Rewards.
  6. Partners with the HRIS team to maintain appropriate levels of support for efficient compensation and benefits processes.
  7. Ensures that all data pertinent to compensation and benefits delivery is compliant with University standards and HR policies and best practices.
  8. Develops, revises and administers policies, procedures and processes for the administration of all Total Reward programs; interprets and advises Senior Management on policies and state and federal laws.
  9. Resolves complex issues of a multi-disciplinary nature involving conflicts between HR policy and practices and University Management team.
  10. In conjunction with the efforts of Compensation and Benefits staff, contributes to the organizational goals of Human Resources through strategy definition and implementation.
  11. Keeps Senior Management abreast on strategies implemented through Compensation & Benefits functions.
  12. Ensures that university leadership and campus community comply with state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to HR administration.
  13. Maintains an understanding of HR best practices and ensures the best use of current technologies in support of HR initiatives.
  14. Represents the department on committees and to internal and external constituents.
  15. Performs other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Bachelors and 5 years experience

Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience.
