Nurse Specialist - Clinical Psychiatry
About the Opportunity
Summary
The Northeastern University Clinical Psych Nurse Specialist's primary responsibility is to perform psychiatric evaluations, diagnose, triage emergencies and provide follow-up care and referral to community clinicians as per departmental service model. The Clinical Psych Nurse Specialist will provide psychopharmacological evaluation and management, including prescription of psychotropic medications following event-based principle. They will also provide clinical consultation to UHCS Mental Health and Medical clinicians and other staff as designated by the Executive Director in accordance with best practices. This is a 35 hours/week, benefits-eligible position. Participation in a rotating weekly on-call schedule with overnight phone consultation availability is required. Schedule includes evening and occasional Saturday hours. Time spent amongst the various clinical service activities may shift in proportion to changes in service demands at any given time of the year. The Clinical Psych Nurse Specialist will often work closely with University academic departments and Student Affairs, and will collaborate with medical and mental health clinicians at the UHCS as appropriate, all in the interest of providing the best possible team-oriented health care to Northeastern students.

Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Psychiatric Nursing, current Commonwealth
of Massachusetts license as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
(APRN) with current authorization by the Board to engage in
advanced practice nursing activities, including prescriptive
practice for psychotropic medications, and ability to perform
comprehensive mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment
plans.
- Certified as either Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse
Practitioner (Adult or Family), or Adult Psychiatric- Mental Health
Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Minimum of 12 months experience as a prescribing psychiatric
nurse clinician. Active Federal DEA and Massachusetts MCSR
certificates
- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication
skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated success
interacting with patients and staff with tact, discretion, and
sensitivity in a highly diverse patient and staff
setting.
- Ability to make safe and appropriate triage, walk-in and urgent
visit assessments, formulate safety and follow-up plans and make
safe and appropriate referral for ongoing community
treatment.
- Must work exceptionally well with students identifying as
BIPOC, LGBTQ students, international students, and other
under-represented students and communities on campus. Must have a
sophisticated understanding of how intersectionality, privilege,
and socioeconomic status relate to the mental health of a global
student community.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the clinical and
administrative policies and procedures of a university health
center setting, and with all health center and academic support
staff, community-based hospitals and health care
providers.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Consultation, outreach and committee work: Provide psycho
educational programming and outreach to the University community.
Serve on University, Divisional and UHCS committees, participate in
health promotions outreach.
- Direct Clinical Services: Provide direct clinical services
including psychiatric evaluations (urgent and scheduled) and follow
up care, crisis intervention, triage and assessment, case
management and documentation, and campus and community referrals.
Perform scheduled psychopharmacologic evaluations, diagnosis and
treatments. Determine and implement appropriate disposition and
referral plans. Consult for supervision as scheduled and as needed.
Demonstrate proficiency with the range of diagnoses and mental
health problems presented by the NU student population. Demonstrate
professional behavior and appropriate treatment
boundaries.
- In service and Interdisciplinary Supervision: Participate in
training and supervision to and from other Mental health and
Medical Staff, as appropriate
