Job Description

The School of Animal Sciences is searching for an Assistant Professor of Gastrointestinal Physiology. This is a tenure-track, 9-month appointment with responsibilities in research and teaching. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background in gastrointestinal and digestive physiology, intestinal microbiology, and/or gut immunobiology as evidenced by a strong publication and funding record. The individual is expected to develop a vigorous, extramurally-supported research program and generate significant scholarly outputs that will establish a national reputation in their field. The individual will have an opportunity to collaborate with existing faculty working in microbiology, neurobiology, data science, nutrition and metabolism, immunobiology, and other health-related research areas that are part of the One Health Initiative at Virginia Tech. Global engagement is important as the incumbent’s career advances, and will contribute to the expansion of Virginia Tech’s reputation in this domain. Successful candidates will have access to research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, and newly renovated animal facilities. The candidate will teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in their area of expertise, and undergraduate academic advising and graduate student education are required. Advancement of equity and inclusion in all facets of the position are expected.

The position is a full-time, 9-month academic year appointment. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Virginia Tech offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have: 1) a Ph.D. in animal sciences or a closely-related field; 2) demonstrated ability to develop and lead an interdisciplinary research program and attract extramural funding; 3) willingness to develop collaborative programs; 4) a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate education; and 5) outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, particularly in communicating science to a lay audience.

Preferred Qualifications

1) extramural funding or evidence of grantsmanship; 2) experience utilizing swine or other animal models; 3) experience teaching undergraduate courses as the instructor of record; and 4) evidence of scholarly output in the form of refereed publications.
