Overview

The James E. Hurley Division invites applicants for an assistant/associate professor of Natural Science to serve as the primary advisor and instructor for the Science Education major. In addition, the successful candidate will teach courses in the Natural Science curriculum, serve on university committees, and participate within the profession and Christian community.

Essential Functions

• Teach Science Education courses such as Environmental Science for Educators, Earth Science for Educators, and other courses as fitting within the Biology and Natural Science departments

• Incorporate Oklahoma Academic Science Standards/Next Generation Science Standards into the Secondary Science curriculum and individual courses

• Supervise Secondary Science Education majors during student teaching semesters

• Counsel and advise Secondary Science Education and Natural Science majors and minors

• Manage and operate the Wood Science planetarium to serve OBU classes and students in the Shawnee area and surrounding communities

• Participate within the campus community, serving on committees as assigned, particularly the Teacher Education Committee and subcommittees

Other Duties

• Assist with the assessment process and accreditation reporting for the Science Education major, including participation in the CAEP accreditation process

• Assist in recruiting students to the Science Education major

• Manage the Wood Science greenhouse

• Assist in planning and managing environmental resources on campus, such as the undeveloped land on both the gold and green campuses

• Participate in community outreach, especially in areas of environmental stewardship

• Engage in scholarship appropriate for a liberal arts environment

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Effectively teach classes in the fields of Science Education and Natural Science

• Integrate the Christian faith into the classroom environment

• Work effectively with college age students in either one on one advisement, small group settings, or large classroom environments

• Demonstrate a passion for environmental stewardship and management with involvement in environmental initiatives and/or organizations

• Possess and demonstrate strong people skills

• Relate to colleagues in the OBU community as well as be a representative to the professional community beyond OBU

• Ability to conduct 2 to 3 classes back-to-back

• Proficiency with office and educational technology, software (including various Microsoft tools), and classroom presentation technology

Education

• Required: Master’s degree in Science Education, Natural Science or Biology

• Preferred: PhD in Science Education, Natural Science or Biology with training in organismal and/or environmental science

Experience

• Required: none

• Preferred: Experience teaching K-12 science or undergraduate Science Education and Natural Science courses, particularly courses with a focus on organismal and/or environmental science
