Research Scientist II/III, Chemistry & Materials

About the Opportunity

Kostas Research Institute (KRI) at Northeastern University (NU) is seeking a highly motivated research scientist with expertise in chemistry and materials to join a rapidly growing team. The research scientist will provide domain subject matter expertise across projects at KRI depending on their level, working as part of a team of research and development (R&D) engineers/scientists. KRI headquarters located at the NU Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM).

The primary responsibilities of this position will include development of optical and adaptive material systems. This position will require the candidate to employ a wide variety of laboratory techniques to incorporate biologically-inspired materials into paint and coating systems, including the formulation, design, production, and characterization of large-area spray-processible coatings. The candidate should have a strong background in analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. A basic understanding of coating formulation science and application methods will be required. Any experience in the development of bio-inspired materials or engineering physical prototypes, including hardware for fabrication or characterization of biomaterials, would be a bonus. The candidate should have an interest in managing highly collaborative research efforts with chemists, physicists, and engineers, and will be expected to contribute to research proposals and reports, write manuscripts, and mentor students or interns. The appointment is contract funded and will be extended pending regular progress evaluation and availability of funding.

  • A PhD degree in analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, materials science, or a related field
  • Strong technical expertise and demonstrated independence in design and execution of experiments
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong background and proven track record in analytical chemistry or materials science and familiarity with formulation science, small molecule synthesis, and color science
  • A basic understanding of characterization techniques including UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, and optical/electron microscopy
  • Familiarity with rapid fabrication techniques (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting) would be a bonus
  • The candidate must be eligible to obtain a security clearance from the US Department of Defense
