Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Student Success Advisor and Student/Alumni Engagement works as part of a growing team in the Office of Graduate Programs within the Cameron School of Business. This position provides program services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position them for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. The Student Success Advisor and Student/Alumni Engagement works with diverse caseloads, including students that are on campus in a traditional model, at distance, in a hybrid model and students that are solely online. Additionally, this position collaborates with faculty advisors in every phase of the student life cycle. This position advises students on: various university and program resources, time management resources and program benchmarks. With a campus mandatory advising model, the Student Success Advisor and Student/Alumni Engagement works consistently with their assigned advisees, but also with prospective and continuing graduate students.

In addition, this position focuses heavily on corroborating opportunities for student and alumni engagement and managing an alumni database and communication software. This includes assisting with student recruitment, maintaining and strengthening relationships with campus and community entities, leading initiatives to engage student campus activities and co-curricular opportunities, including potential skill-based badging or micro-credentialing opportunities. The position will collaborate with Graduate Programs stakeholders to arrange online and face-to-face meetings and events for current students, alumni and others.

This position relies heavily on significant use of communication via phone, video conference, email, and other forms of communication, therefore UNCW Student Success Advisor and Student/Alumni Engagement are excellent communicators, self-starters, quick learners and are motivated by working in a collaborative environment. This position reports to the Director of Graduate Programs and works to develop and maintain retention plans to keep students in the program(s) and on track through graduation. This position will require frequent travel for events, including overnight travel. Additionally non traditional work hours will be frequent especially for travel and events.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s Degree in higher education or related area OR hold a master’s degree with at least 3 years of related work experience with a university or college setting.

  • Demonstrated professionalism in effective judgment and professional integrity
  • Ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to and execution in customer service
  • Experienced with and a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds in both face-to-face and distance/online environments
  • Ability to utilize and learn various advising and software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based delivery systems.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the field of adult learning, student development, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services, as well as, all relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
  • Ability to work irregular work hours, frequent evening, weekends, and holiday hours
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Demonstrated experience in effectively working in a matrix organization.
Experienced with the assessment of programs and services.
Minimum one-year experience working exclusively with an online student population and/or online advising model.
Possess a proven track record for effective advising, coaching, and communication skills within a diverse student population.
Applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, as well as enterprise platforms (Banner, Degree Works, Web Now, Apply Yourself, etc.).

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Graduate Programs Office is responsible for overseeing the graduate programs within the Cameron School of Business: Master of Science in Accountancy; Master of Computer Science & Information Systems; Professional MBA ; Online Corporate MBA ; Online Executive MBA ; International MBA ; MS Business Analytics; MS in Finance and Investment Management; as well as a Business Foundations Certificate. The office processes applications for admission, provides general student support, administrative support for events, hires and manages graduate assistants, fiscal administration for graduate program budgets, and manages graduation processes.
