Position Overview

The Data Architect position requires complex problem-solving skills and a strong business acumen. This position works closely with business partners across campus to determine business requirements and is responsible for defining, implementing and enabling advanced analytics solutions and capabilities as a key member of our analytics team. Along with data analysis and data engineering, this position will be modeling business problems and discovering insights through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques.

The Data Architect develops streaming andor ELTETL data integrations using combinations of scripting and Talend and works in all phases of database administration at Butler University. This role provides a wide range of technical expertise in database technologies (MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Linux and Windows Server). Much of the effort will improve our efficiency in delivering the various applications and services used by the faculty, staff, and students at Butler University.

The Data Architect is responsible for developing and maintaining a formal description of the business data and data structures using logical and physical data models. This individual is responsible for developing and enforcing data modeling standards and best practices, managing the enterprise data model and managing all metadata in the environment.

Primary Responsibilities:


Work with IT account managers and university business units to spec requirements for new data integrations or major changes to existing integrations
Maintain the university’s data catalog (information and data architecture), ensuring that it is kept up-to-date as application and data needs change
General data team operations and client support, including but not limited to answering data and business process questions, troubleshooting issues, completing portfolio project work as assigned, and assisting with the building and maintaining of the standard operational integrations for university systems
Build and maintain data integrations using visualization/analytics tools and systems including application updates
Work with business units on visualization and analytics projects
Manage multiple priorities and interact effectively as a team member and participate in group meetings and team building activities

Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Computer Technology, or computer related field or 2 to 1 work experience Required
Other Database design/admin certifications are a plus Preferred


2-4 yrs. Experience in an business analysis, business development, or pre-sales engineer role in a technical environment Required
2-4 yrs. Experience with relational databases, data lakes, and data warehouses with in depth knowledge of SQL querying languages (PL/SQL, T-SQL, etc.) Preferred
2-4 yrs. Specialization in informatics, data analysis/data science or related field Preferred
4-7 yrs. Familiarity with both enterprise and cloud system architecture concepts Preferred
2-4 yrs. Diagramming and modeling of information/data architecture Preferred
2-4 yrs. Data analysis and visualization Preferred


Analytical The ability to analyze, visualize, articulate, and conceptualize complex and noncomplex problems; ability to facilitate and develop innovative solutions in a collaborative manner with business unit staff as well as IT staff Intermediate
