Job Description

The Biosafety Professional (BSP) assists the Biosafety Officer (BSO) in developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive Biosafety Program that is designed to support and facilitate research and teaching while protecting people and the environment from the adverse effects of research involving bio-hazardous and recombinant DNA materials (e.g. microbes, prions, toxins, transgenics) etc. The BSP conducts work tasks with minimal supervision and is responsive to requests for assistance from other departmental managers and the EHS Director as needed. The BSP assesses University facilities to determine suitability for use in potentially hazardous biomedical research operations, and advises professional and technical staff regarding biosafety practices, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs on-site regulatory/policy compliance reviews of facilities to be used for biohazardous agent manipulations; inspects, assesses, and reports on suitability for use, and interfaces with lab personnel, investigators, and others as needed to ensure follow up and correction of problems.
  • Serve as an alternate for the Biosafety Officer on the MU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
  • Assist the BSO with reviewing IBC protocol applications and providing technical advice to Principal Investigators and the IBC on research safety procedures.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Inspect laboratories and other locations where biological hazards may be present. Identify, document, and communicate violations and provide technical assistance for correction.
  • Assists with risk assessments related to the use of biohazardous material, (including select agents and toxins) to implement appropriate safety measures and compliance.
  • Conduct post-incident investigations, formulate appropriate corrective actions, and assist in their successful implementation.
  • Serve as an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for the MU Select Agent program providing regulatory guidance and oversight for select agent work at the University of Missouri.
  • Helps develop, implement, and enhance checklists and other auditing/surveying methods designed to assess the adequacy of operations and facilities conducting biological research.
Salary

Salary Range: $49,000 to $63,000 annually

GGS Grade: 10

7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Monday through Friday

Some additional hours may be required occasionally.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and/or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) credentialing is preferred.
  • Experience with biomedical research involving human, animal, and plant pathogens as well as knowledge of research involving the use of recombinant and/or synthetic nucleic acids.
  • Knowledge of biosafety regulations, and biosafety level (BSL) 1 and 2 lab practices. Experience with BSL-3 containment is desired.
