Senior Model-Based Engineering Project Manager

Job Details

What We Do

The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. We work closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Our core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect free, within budget and on time, every time.

We in the SEI’s Model-Based Engineering initiative are developing architecture-centric, model-based engineering (MBE) theories and practices for use in the development of large-scale, complex, safety-critical systems. As a member of our team, you will help support SEI customers in their use of novel MBE practices. Your work will often be related to U.S. national security.

Position Summary

As a Model-Based Engineering Project Manager at the SEI, you will define and manage projects with SEI customers and serve as a bridge across internal and customer-oriented projects in various MBE-adjacent areas and disciplines. You will also work with our development team to design, implement, and maintain a portfolio of model-based technologies.

Your work will be in one of our locations or at customer sites to make hands-on technical contributions to team projects, working with the team to plan, develop, and implement technical projects. This work requires that you understand the technical challenges and emerging trends in model-based techniques applied to the engineering of safety-critical systems for SEI customers. You will use tools and standards to model and analyze the properties of software-intensive systems (e.g., for early design error detection or to produce assurance evidence). You will also participate in developing tools and training materials and help customers throughout their projects.

On our team, you will frequently interact with customers, internal collaborators, and SEI leaders. You will also mentor other staff members and collaborators on technical project management practices. In this role, you will be involved in the full range of the SEI’s technical work, including preparing and delivering proposals, papers, and presentations; participating in the full lifecycle of projects—from formulation, to execution, to transition; and proposing follow-on work.

As a Model-Based Engineering Project Manager on our team, you will guide and manage projects by
  • coordinating internal and external resources to execute projects
  • ensuring that project deliverables are completed on time, within scope, and within budget
  • helping define each project’s scope and objectives, involving relevant stakeholders, and ensuring feasibility
  • ensuring resource availability and allocation
  • developing detailed project plans to monitor and track progress
  • helping manage changes to the project’s scope, schedule, and costs
  • measuring project performance using appropriate tools and techniques
  • reporting and escalating issues to management as needed
  • successfully helping manage relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • implementing risk management techniques to minimize project risks
  • establishing and maintaining relationships with members of the SEI and CMU communities, customer organizations, etc.
  • helping create and maintain comprehensive project documentation
In addition to your project management skills, you must be familiar with the following MBE practices at an operational level:
  • MBE tools and standards (e.g., AADL, SysML, UML)
  • software development design and implementation tools and languages (e.g., Java programming, the Eclipse development platform and plug-in environment)
  • system-level quality attributes (e.g., safety, reliability, cybersecurity) and the mechanisms for specifying, capturing, analyzing, and evaluating them in a model-driven approach
In addition, you must demonstrate the following skills:
  • strategy formulation, planning, and execution
  • strong written and verbal communication
  • the ability to present to small and large audiences in academic and government settings
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Education/Training: You must have a BS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience: You must have eight years of experience in practice architecting systems using MBE solutions.

Mental: You must be able to explore and solve complex, ill-defined problems and work meticulously with attention to detail. You need to be a self-starter who is willing to take on tasks and develop new research ideas. You must be able to work collaboratively, diplomatically, and successfully with customers and co-workers and interact with world-class research community members.

Other: You will be subject to a background check. Since you will be considered for employment as a fully or partially remote employee, you must demonstrate the ability to work remotely on a distributed team. Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements

Education/Training: We prefer that you have a PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience: Our preference is for you to have eight years of experience in MBE research and/or practice architecting safety-critical systems. We also prefer that you have specific experience with Department of Defense (DoD) customers or contractors.

Other: We prefer that you are eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Accountability: We prefer that you are able to conduct research with minimal supervision and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks.

Direction: We expect you to carry out your duties with minimal supervision, in accordance with the SEI’s technical strategy. This includes acting in accordance with SEI procedures and policies, including those pertaining to technical leadership, analysis, report production, and confidentiality. This also includes carrying out the responsibilities of the position in accordance with the expressed interests of the SEI’s sponsor and customers when performing externally funded work. We expect you to collaborate closely with others within and across SEI initiatives and directorates.

Decisions: We prefer that you regularly suggest possible solutions to colleagues and users.
