The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Assistant. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the candidate will operate as part of a research team with HEPIUS Innovation Lab at Johns Hopkins Medicine that is focusing on the design and development of novel ultrasonic medical devices, as well as the application of these technologies on biological models. The candidate will work closely with the Neurosurgery department to conduct in silico, ex vivo, and in vivo research using diagnostic ultrasound. The candidate should be able to work in a fast-paced environment requiring ideation, experimentation, and data analysis. Communication and teamwork are important for this position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Testing and comparison of commercial and custom diagnostic ultrasound devices.
  • After training, handle and operate commercial ultrasound systems (eg. Philips EPIQ, Canon Aplio, BrainLab’s Neuronavigation System, and Verasonics).
  • Processing of ultrasound images collected from large animal models and humans.
  • Develop and execute projects given data provided.
  • Involvement in science communication.
  • Attend and take notes at lab meetings.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff regarding grant submissions, as necessary.
  • Collection of data while under supervision for IRB-approved projects involving human neurosurgeries.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Familiarity with Python or a similar coding language.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • The ability to comprehend and engage in scientific discourse.
  • Critical and design thinking.
  • Experience in experimental design for research projects is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills including zoom, presentation, excel, and project management software.
  • Coding languages beyond Python are a plus.
  • Experience in image processing is preferred.
  • Scientific writing and/or communication experience.
