The Cochella lab is looking for a Research
Specialist who will join a young and dynamic,
international, scientific community to tackle questions related to
regulation of gene expression during development and disease. The
main responsibilities will be ensuring the smooth day-to-day
running of the laboratory (including managing supplies and
reagents), molecular biology work, and work with the nematode
Caenorhabditis elegans (such as managing a frozen strain
collection, microinjection, microscopy and genetics). For
interested candidates there will be opportunities to pursue an
independent research project, and a chance to make an important
contribution to basic biomedical research.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform a range of assays and experiments specific to area of research, which will include handling C. elegans and generating transgenic lines, molecular cloning, immunostaining, in situ hybridization and microscopy, among others.
- Make contributions to various aspects of research efforts: team up with students and postdocs to advance specific research projects
- Managing the C. elegans collection.
- Preparing solutions and other reagents for general use.
- Overall lab organization.
- Ordering and obtaining quotes from Vendors for equipment and consumables.
- Equipment maintenance, coordinating repairs and service contracts.
- Shipping reagents to collaborators.
- Have strong communication skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Knowledge of good lab practices required (including
detail-oriented documentation).
- Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets,
relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages
to assemble, format data and/or test reports.
- Individual must be able to work independently as well as in a
team.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may
remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 70% of
the time.
- Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or
to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations
on campus.
- The employee is required to operate computer keyboard,
laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as
pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides.
Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work
stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
- Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer
screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity
is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and
closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
- May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes). In some areas work space is limited.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with molecular biology preferred.
- Experience with microscopy and/or C. elegans work will be highly regarded.
