Assistant/Associate Professor in Crop Protection and Director of the Plant Pest Containment laboratory

Position Description

The Department of Plant Science of McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (FAES) invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of crop protection, with a specialization in molecular plant-pathogen interactions and/or biocontrol in forages, field, pulses, or horticultural crops. In addition, the incumbent will take on Directorship of the CFI funded Eastern Canadian Plant Phenotyping Platform (ECP3) Plant Pest Containment lab/Quarantine Facility, scheduled for completion in 2023. This facility was constructed with the aim to help combat the increasing shifts in pathogen pressure and diversity associated with climate change in Eastern Canada and Québec, and to achieve this goal with less application of traditional pesticides as per government guidance (https://www.quebec.ca/gouvernement/politiques-orientations/politique-bioalimentaire/agriculture- durable ) and the strategic plan of the FAES (https://www.mcgill.ca/macdonald/research/aes-strategic- research-plan ).

 

McGill’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is located on the Macdonald Campus, 30 km from the city of Montreal, where there is a concentration of life sciences and biotechnology companies. The Campus comprises 650 hectares of farm and forested lands, experimental field stations and state-of- the-art student learning facilities, a library and computer laboratories. Current research programs in the Department of Plant Science include a wide variety of plant species, such as soybean, corn, pulses (beans, chickpea), cereals (wheat, barley), forages (clovers, alfalfa), and horticultural crops (potatoes, strawberries). Job Duties

The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program with an emphasis on plant-pathogen interactions, which may include biocontrol or innovative crop protection approaches. The research program should include state of the art technologies in plant pathology, for example, virulence mechanisms, epidemiology/predictive modeling/remote sensing, phenomics, control target identification, host resistance, diagnostics, disease management, and disease ecology.

 

The incumbent will be responsible for teaching a course in Plant Pathology as well as participate in graduate courses within her/his area of research expertise. Participation in Departmental, Faculty, and University committees and with provincial, national and international organizations is expected.

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Crop/Plant Science, Molecular Pathology, Disease Ecology, Epidemiology, Population Biology or a related field; as well as a track record with demonstrated research excellence and demonstrated successful research collaborations with both private and public sectors. Knowledge of cropping systems is desirable. Knowledge of French is an asset, as is eligibility to obtain a professional certification in agrology (Ordre des agronomes du Québec, OAQ) and demonstrated experience leading work in quarantine/plant pest containment facilities.
