Position Summary

Governors State University is seeking to hire a Collection Assistant Manager to assist in planning, supervising, developing, and managing policies related to in-house collections, pre-claim services and external collection entities. The position further assists with supervision of the Student Accounts team. The position requires employee to act as liaison to departments within the university and contacts outside the university.

35% Management:
• Assists in developing and implementing collection policies and procedures
• Supervises and trains assigned staff
• Attend meetings to represent Student Accounts as needed.
• Conduct student account presentations at student orientation sessions.
• Assist Student Account team members with difficult situations that require a manager.
• Respond in detail to students that require a manager review.
• Back-up for annual billing table set up. Included but not limited to:
o Acting as liaison between departments to ensure accuracy of information
o Testing new programs and fees
o Reviewing data entered for accuracy
o Testing the tuition calculator for accuracy

35% Collections:
• Facilitate all aspects of the in-house collection process.
• Serve as a resource person and act as liaison to collection agencies, students and other campus departments.
• Refer accounts to third party collection agencies when in-house collection efforts have been exhausted.
• Bankruptcies
o Monitor active student bankruptcies.
o Obtain, scan and organize bankruptcy notices on the network.
o Perform necessary procedures to a student’s account once the bankruptcy has discharged or dismissed.
• Monitor and maintain the term collection placement schedule to both the State of Illinois Offset System and the collection agencies.

25% Student Accounts:
• Illinois Attorney General Write-offs
• Perform monthly reconciliations for the collection clearing account.
• Responsible for employee’s direct extension. Back up Student Accounts telephone line as needed.
• Administration and coordination of the federal student loan programs (Perkins & Nurse Faculty Loan Program)
o Reconcile statements from UAS monthly
o Act as liaison for UAS
o Facilitate the Perkins loan assignments

5% Miscellaneous duties as assigned including bur not limited to:
• Perform duties for direct reports during absences.
• Backup Director of Financial Services, as needed.
• Perform analysis and create reports related to functions described in this job description document.

Starting Salary: $41,340.00.
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED : COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS, WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION (See “Special instructions to applicants” section below).

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling two (2) years, from the categories below:

A. College course work that included courses in finance, accounting, business administration, business management, or a closely related field
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year
  • Associate degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years
  • Bachelor’s degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) year

B. Collection, consumer credit, or business experience that required knowledge of collection methods and procedures.

2. Two (2) years of collection experience comparable to the Collection Specialist level or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
