Term Assistant Professor of Microbiology

 

The George Mason University Department of Biology invites individuals with a dedication to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate biology students to apply for an instructional faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2023. This is a renewable, non-tenure track, full-time teaching position. The incumbent will teach introductory and upper-level courses in microbiology (lectures and laboratories).

About the Department:

The Department of Biology includes 12 tenured and tenure-track and 14 term faculty focused on undergraduate and graduate education. It maintains research facilities including a 1700 sq. ft. climate-controlled greenhouse and an active 80,000 specimen herbarium. The Department has over 1500 undergraduate majors and employs more than 50 Graduate Teaching Assistants as well as Adjunct faculty. Faculty from the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, the School of Systems Biology, the School of Integrative Studies, and the STEM Accelerator Program also contribute to the Biology Department through courses and research collaborations.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities during the academic year include teaching undergraduate level courses and laboratories, and some undergraduate academic advising.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful applicants will have a PhD in microbiology or a related-field, and prior college or university teaching experience; and Commitment to education of a diverse student body.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with prior evidence of teaching excellence expertise in microbial physiology and/or microbial genetics.
