Job Description:
The Writer will join an energetic and dynamic team of communications professionals as we continue to elevate the brand of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), build awareness of the college's programs, people, and research, and advance the university's reputation. Primary duties include writing for a wide variety of print materials, including publications for the Advancement Office; serving as the associate editor of Ytori magazine and producer of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' digital newsletters; developing narratives for digital storytelling; preparing news releases; playing a primary role in curating content for the CLAS website; and building engagement by functioning as the primary voice for social media communications. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic project planning to
promote the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences by interacting
with and interviewing faculty, students, staff, and alumni
(publicity promotions), collecting information from various
sources, and varying language and tone of messages based on product
and medium.
Writing and proofreading for print
media, including Ytori magazine, CLAS newsletters, invitations,
posters, news articles, brochures, letters, and fact sheets.
Submitting print media to Editor for final review and
approval.
Writing and proofreading for
digital media, including developing content for the college's news
site, units' websites, dean's office updates, and email blasts —
submitting for final review to Editor.
Maintaining a variety of social
media platforms for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,
including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
YouTube.
Promoting special projects and
programs identified by the Editor, as needed.
Photography and videography.
Other duties as assigned.
Expected Salary:
The salary range is $45,000 - $48,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area; or an Associate's degree and two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Four-year degree in English, journalism, or related field and a Master's degree
- Adherence to professional journalistic standards
- A minimum of two years' experience in a communications
position
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet
deadlines, effectively manage priorities, and communicate
progress
- A passion for language, with the ability to digest complicated
material and render it into lively, easily understood
prose
- Intuitive (or learned) understanding of writing for the web,
including web accessibility and SEO strategies
- Organized self-starter
- Experience interacting with university faculty about their
research
- Desire to grow as a writer and communicator
- Great sense of humor
- Knowledge of style guides, particularly AP Style Book and
Chicago Manual of Style and experience with substantive editing,
copyediting, and proofreading
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom,
InDesign, Acrobat)
- Social media proficiency
- Ability to work in a team environment and
independently
- Familiarity with strategic messaging
- Experience with Google Analytics
- Experience composing messages using e-mail marketing software
(Emma, Mailchimp, Hubspot)
- Photography experience
- Videography experience
