The basics of this position:

Serves students in the TRIO Student Support Services program, a federally funded grant designed to support first-generation, limited income, and students with documented disabilities in reaching their academic goals. TRIO Advisors assist in course selection and registration, help students apply for federal financial aid and scholarships, and assist students in identifying and applying to four-year transfer institutions. Advisors also plan and implement cultural enrichment activities, college tours, workshops, and other programming that increases student retention, graduation and success.

What you'll do:
  • • Assists students with post-secondary course selection, academic planning, financial aid counseling, career exploration, financial literacy and transfer advising.
    • Develops and updates student success plans and graduation plans for students.
    • Assists students in applying for federal financial aid such as completing the FAFSA.
    • Assist students in identifying and applying for scholarships.
    • Assists with new student recruitment efforts, including facilitating orientations, meeting with
    students to conduct intake interviews, and facilitating presentations to various stakeholders.
    • Maintains student files, tracks contacts, maintains student records, and completes reports.
    • Maintains a caseload of students, monitors academic progress, and implements mid-semester
    evaluations.
    • Develops programming to improve student retention.
    • Train and supervise student workers, serves on committees related to academic advising and/or retention, monitors services and prepares reports as needed.
    • Assists with the completion of overall TRIO Student Support Services grant goals and objectives.
    • Builds and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, STLCC staff, faculty and transfer institutions.
    • Plans, implements and facilitates personal, academic and career development workshops.
    • Plans and implements cultural enrichment activities, and college tours.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, experience, and other requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field. Two years’ experience preferred in advising, counseling,
coaching, documentation, case management, training, and development.
• Applicant must also possess strong communication, organizational, public speaking, and
interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in education, counseling or related field is preferred
• Experience with retention, program development and student success initiatives
• Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students served by the project
• Previous experience working for TRIO Student Support Services or other TRIO programs
