Position Summary

The lab tech will have the following duties:
  • Lab preparation for cell and molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology labs or other courses as scheduled. Occasional preparation for special projects such as Honors or Independent Study
  • Procurement of supplies and equipment; maintaining inventory/stocks
  • Maintenance of lab / prep room; storage of supplies, safe disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste
  • Training and supervision of lab aide / student worker

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related discipline
  • Knowledge of hazardous and biohazardous materials and appropriate handling and disposition
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with spreadsheet software
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex academic problems, observe and interpret situations, learn and apply new information or skills
  • Ability to clean and maintain common laboratory equipment such as microscopes and repeating syringes
  • While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or listen, both in person and by telephone, use hands repetitively to prepare microbiological and molecular materials and operate office and laboratory equipment
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms and lift up to 40 pounds
  • Perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadliness with frequent interruptions; and interact with constituents and others encountered in the course of work
  • Relevant experience with aseptic technique and typical laboratory equipment

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Biology or related discipline
  • Familiarity with common undergraduate laboratory exercises

    Position Details - Job duties include but are not limited to:

    Lab preparation for cell and molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology labs or other courses as scheduled. Occasional preparation for special projects such as Honors or Independent Study. Performance is acceptable when:

    a. materials for lab exercises are available as scheduled.

    b. work is scheduled effectively for preparation of laboratory materials.

    c. regular communication is maintained with faculty regarding lab procedures, supplies and equipment, especially any changes in materials / location.

    d. safety guidelines / requirements are followed.

    Procurement of supplies and equipment; maintaining inventory/stocks Performance is acceptable when:

    a. orders are submitted for equipment and supplies with sources, prices, and delivery dates.

    b. spreadsheet / inventory of materials is maintained.

    c. materials are handled and stored safely.

    Maintenance of lab / prep room; storage of supplies, safe disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste Performance is acceptable when:

    a. materials are dated, organized, and stored safely.

    b. lab supplies are refilled / stocked as needed c. hazardous and nonhazardous waste is collected and is appropriately stored or disposed of.

    Training and supervision of lab aide / student worker Performance is acceptable when:

    a. lab aide / student worker is trained in lab skills including safety.

    b. lab aide / student worker are supervised and monitored to ensure quality and successful completion of work.
