The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture ( APLA ) at Auburn University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an appointment in the Environmental Design ( ENVD ) program. We seek enthusiastic, creative and committed candidates willing to contribute to the development and future vision of the ENVD program. Applicants from allied design fields including, but not limited to graphic design, industrial design, architecture, design-build, landscape architecture, and urban design are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be willing to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching, research, and outreach activities.

The School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture resides in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction along with the School of Industrial and Graphic Design and the McWhorter School of Building Science. Nested within design and construction disciplines, the Environmental Design program is an interdisciplinary, non-professional degree focusing on the interconnected nature of all design and construction fields. Focus areas in the ENVD curriculum include transdisciplinary design, civic engagement through project-based collaboration, and a focus on the interdependence of systems, artifacts, and deployments in the build environment. Graduates of the ENVD program are nimble and adaptable designers who can evaluate and respond to complex challenges and at the same time, are well prepared to pursue a graduate degree in a number of design and construction-related fields.

The individual in this position will be expected to:
1. Teach undergraduate courses within the ENVD program.
2. Develop and maintain a scholarly program in accordance with the mission of the University.
3. Interact with environmental design advisory & curriculum committees and program alumni.
4. Work with student organizations and/or mentor students.
5. Candidates with a strong interest in teaching design and one of the following topic areas are encourage to apply:
a. History & Theory of Design
b. Object/Product Design
c. Graphic Design
d. Use Experience / User Interface design
e. Transdisciplinary Design
f. Digital applications inclusive of AR/VR, building technologies, graphic interface design, etc.

This position includes teaching nine credit hours per semester (typically three classes), some of which are hybrid and integrated design studios. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the pedagogy of the ENVD curriculum. Additionally, applicants are expected to continue and/or develop an active program of scholarly and creative work. The School of Architecture, Planning and Landsape Architecture is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching, research, outreach, and service.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. It will be based on a nine-month academic year appointment, and there may be an opportunity to participate in Environmental Design studios during summer terms.

Minimum Qualifications

Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree from at least one of the allied design fields including, but not limited to: graphic design, architecture, design-build, landscape architecture, and urban design at time of employment. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time this position is scheduled to commence and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired qualifications include:
1. Evidence of strong verbal and visual communication skills
2. Evidence of potential to be an excellent teacher and effectively relate to ENVD students
3. Evidence of the potential to develop a scholarly agenda
