Position Summary

Prof. Mishuana Goeman in the Department of Indigenous Studies welcome applications for a Postdoctoral Associate . Indigenous Studies scholars with expertise in a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary departments are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a strong background in the field of Indigenous studies, methodologies, ethics and practices and promise of a strong research profile. A commitment to serving Indigenous communities is a must. Evidence of using anti-colonial methodologies and sustained engagement with Indigenous communities is imperative to our mission in Indigenous Studies at UB. Geographic area of expertise is open but we especially encourage applicants with research experience in the Great Lakes border area. Candidates are expected to have a completed Ph.D. in hand by September 1, 2023.

Situated in Haudenosaunee territory, UB’s Indigenous Studies growing program has a fifty year plus record of community engagement and cutting-edge field development. Inspired by the modern and universal relevance of Haudenosaunee knowledge, the department seeks to advance purposeful Indigenous-centered scholarship with a global impact. Points of distinction include:

• Prioritizing Indigenous community-guided research;
• Anti-colonial methodologies in Gender and Sexuality Studies;
• Supporting Indigenous language resurgence, particularly in ways that recognize the success and expertise of on-territory Indigenous language immersion programs;
• Prioritizing land-based education and research, and developing a curriculum that emphasizes Indigenous history, epistemology, philosophy and contemporary political theory and action with regard to Indigenous land-based relationships.

The Post-doctoral Associate will work closely with an assigned mentor in one of these areas. We offer meaningful engagement for professional and community development. This includes grant participation, seminar and workshop opportunities, guidance in publishing research papers, presenting at our annual Storyteller’s Conference, and advice while on the job market. Initial appointment will be for 1-year with potential for renewal.

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Social Sciences or Humanities or a JD in American Indian Law conferred in the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with Tribal Nations, communities, or organizations.
