Position Summary

The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the operational leadership the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) with involvement in the day to day operational and administrative functions.

This role will require both team leadership/supervision and direct contribution in the management of initiatives and projects. Under the leadership of the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Assistant Director contributes to the development and implementation of the College’s strategic DEI initiatives, policies, practices, and programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

DEI Leadership (Programs & Projects)

Assists with departmental efforts to create, coordinate, implement, and evaluate initiatives which help foster an environment that is inclusive and supportive for all. Partners with a variety of departments across the College to create and promote programming designed to cultivate an appreciation of the many dimensions of diversity. Serves as primary point of contact for the development and execution of DEI projects that involve collaboration with internal and external partners.

Under guidance of the Director, helps to facilitate targeted diversity trainings for campus stakeholders. Monitors regulatory, political, and academic DEI trends and makes relevant recommendations to Director and Vice President of DEI based on findings. Contributes to program and policy development by staying current on best practices and emerging trends in higher education.

Operational Leadership

Provides day-to-day office leadership and serves as supervisor of record for student employees. Responsible for the direct supervision of professional staff members and student employees.

Directs staff and operations by assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, resolving conflict, communicating job expectations, training employees, and developing professional growth development opportunities as needed. Carries out, explains, interprets and enforces policy.

Conducts annual employee evaluations, and recommends pay increases, promotions and other personnel actions. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime as appropriate. Participates in employee selection process. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval, and in collaboration with Human Resources. Assists with monitoring and ensuring compliance with a single department budget process.

Assists the Director in carrying out the day-to-day departmental operations of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Assists in creating and nurturing a culturally humble campus community that fosters positive student success outcomes across identities and demographics. Contributes to the development and implementation of the College’s strategic DEI initiatives,
policies, practices, and provides leadership for major DEI-related campus wide programming.

DEI Strategy

Serves as subject matter expert for DEI. Researches and implements best practices related to diversity & inclusion, engagement, assessment, and supervision. Consistently participates in professional development opportunities (e.g. conferences, webinars, articles) and applies acquired knowledge and skills to the operations and growth of ODEI and College-wide
engagement opportunities. Collaborates with DEI Director to ensure office is implementing best practices.

Partners with the ERG Strategy and Operations Manager to help employees from every department find meaningful ways to belong at Columbus State and/or learn ways to incorporate the work of equity and inclusion in their positions. Partners with Student Affairs, Human Resources, and Equity & Compliance to help foster a welcoming, inclusive, and productive work and
learning environment.

Administrative

Collects, analyzes, and utilizes data and feedback to identify opportunities to enhance or improve ODEI initiatives. Will work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Human Resources to gather key DEI data points for submission in an annual report to the Director and Vice President of DEI. Responsible for keeping accurate records and maintains required
documentation. Completes and maintains required documentation, including departmental reports, budget information, and other data. Keeps accurate records.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community. Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with diverse groups and communities. Partners strategically with Talent Acquisition to ensure the best Diversity, Equity & Inclusion practices are utilized in hiring that results in the hiring and retention of a diverse faculty and staff. Helps to ensure the College meets its responsibilities in identifying problem areas and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination.

Takes responsibility for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and productive work and learning environment where employees and students feel valued and able to contribute to their full potential, regardless of their differences. Assists with conducting workforce analytics to identify potential inhibitors of a workplace environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Performs other duties as assigned. *Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.


OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Work may require travel within and outside the state of Ohio. Hours may include working outside of a normal workweek schedule as needed to meet workload demands. Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federal and state, as well as internal regulations and procedures. Ensures department and College name and image is perceived positively by external as well as internal audience/stakeholders.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience leading diversity and equity work.
*An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
