Overview

This is an exciting time to join Princeton as it continues its ambitious, multi-year capital construction program. Princeton University’s Office of Capital Projects (OCP), seeks an experienced Architectural Engineer to join our dynamic staff. Reporting to the Program Manager of Commissioning, OCP, the Architectural Engineer is responsible for coordinating the University’s interests between multiple Facilities offices through all phases of Capital Construction projects for architectural-related trades.

Responsibilities

Act as point of contact for design and technical reviews conducted for all Capital Project design submissions. This position represents all architectural trades including site, landscaping, envelope, interior finishes, accessibility, furniture, fixtures and equipment (FFE), door hardware, security, and audio-visual systems. The position works closely with the MEP Project Engineer who represents the Civil, MEP, FP, FA trades in parallel. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate technical design review schedules, record and post the outcomes of reviews and resolve associated conflicts between vested internal departments.
  • Aid project teams in determining the completeness of design submittals and bring to closure any comments generated. This includes design critique, innovative thinking and post-occupancy problem-solving.
  • Review Architectural construction documents to confirm proper coordination with the project design plans and resolve technical design differences that emerge between various Facilities offices.
  • Participate in cost estimate reviews, cost reconciliation, cost reduction and value engineering and change order processes.
  • Participate in design and construction Building Information Model (BIM) coordination reviews with selected Facilities Department representatives to ensure access and maintainability requirements are addressed during coordination efforts.
  • Distribute project shop drawings, submittals, and Requests for Information (RFI’s) to appropriate personnel in Facilities for comments. Review, resolve conflicts and forward solutions to the field. Invoke participation from appropriate personnel in Facilities for comments on mock-ups, samples, and proposed change orders.
  • Act as point of contact for the University Design Standards Manual (DSM) documentation and coordinate and publish formal updates on a biannual basis. The DSM is an integral part of Facilities Capital Projects’ quality assurance procedures. The standards are critical to the success of all Capital Projects on campus. As such, the management and coordination of these standards is a key role for the Architectural Engineer
Manage support tools and procedures for Capital Projects including but not limited to:

  • Cost database maintenance for design, bid, and as-built project costs and construction materials across major Capital projects for reference on current and future projects.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) database for in house management of University civil infrastructure layers, and site/landscape work.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in reviewing plans for major construction or renovation projects with at least five years total experience must be associated with work on projects similar to those found in an institutional environment.
  • Position requires a professional degree in Architecture or Engineering or related field and/or journey-level experience.
  • Current AutoCAD Release drafting experience
  • Ability to interpret construction documents, an understanding of applicable NJAC construction codes, working knowledge of the principles of design, architectural building elements and systems, as well as a solid grasp of construction industry practices and procedures.
  • Able to work both individually and collaboratively in a dynamic institutional environment of several hundred internal and external contacts.
  • Experience with the use of project collaboration software and the ability to give clear directions, follow-up on actions and report issues to management is highly desirable.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional registration as an Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of New Jersey is preferred or previous training needed to obtain licensure.
  • Experience as an Owner’s side representative within an institutional setting.
  • Licenses and Professional Accreditation.
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, PMP certification.
  • Basic knowledge of Revit, G.I.S. modeling and BIM.
