POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor - Biochemistry

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees with concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master's degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. The department is undergoing rapid growth and currently has over 400 majors. Our degree programs include a strong focus on instrumentation and hands-on experiences. We place a high value on faculty mentored research for undergraduates and graduate students. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete MS/PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in high schools/community colleges in the Sacramento region.

POSITION DETAILS:

The position is tenure-track and will be at the Assistant Professor level. The assigned teaching load is 12 units per semester, with opportunities for release time to support exceptional levels of service.

JOB DUTIES:

Duties will include: teaching courses in biochemistry laboratory classes; teaching undergraduate and graduate biochemistry lecture courses; teaching general, organic and biochemistry (GOB) lecture and laboratory courses; advising undergraduate and graduate students; participating in committee assignments at the department, college and university level as well as engaging in chemistry-related community service activities; developing and maintaining departmental facilities; advancing programs and curricula in biochemistry; writing external grant proposals; and developing a program of scholarship in biochemistry or a closely related area involving undergraduate and graduate students. Normal teaching loads are 3-4 classes per semester (lectures and labs).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Ph.D. in Biochemistry, or closely related field. ABD will be considered. If ABD, all degree requirements must be completed by August 2023.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:

Applicant must possess a strong background in biochemistry. Applicants must be able to teach biochemistry laboratories and upper division/master's level lecture courses in biochemistry and general, organic and biochemistry (GOB) to allied health majors. Ability to develop curricular materials in biochemistry, to instruct students in modern instrumentation, to develop independent research projects involving undergraduate and graduate students and to compete for external grants is required. A commitment to teaching and mentoring students with diverse identities and experiences, and developing curriculum and assessment practices that center on student learning and success.

Experience:

Experience teaching college-level chemistry is required. Applicants must have an experimental background using modern chemical instrumentation. Applicants are expected to develop an experimentally based research program in biochemistry or a closely related area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidate demonstrates knowledge and/or desire to implement teaching strategies to foster student success in introductory, upper division and graduate level chemistry courses.
  • Experience teaching a diverse student population.
  • Post-doctoral research experience.
  • Interest and ability to engage in cross-disciplinary research (bioorganic, bioanalytical, biopolymer, for example) and to develop courses in these areas.
