Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Wall Aquatic Center is now hiring a Pool Operations Specialist, Senior. This position will maintain the aquatic facilities at Wall Aquatic Center. The Wall Aquatic Center offers Northern Arizona University and the Flagstaff community one of the finest high-altitude swimming facilities in the world.

Wall Aquatic Center facilities include:
  • A 50-meter by 25-yard competitive pool with movable bulkhead to convert it to Olympic size.
  • A separate 25-meter by 25-yard by 17-foot deep dive tank with a three-line 10-meter dive tower and one and three-meter springboards.
  • A warm-up spa for swimmers and divers

The Pool Operations Specialist, Senior performs necessary maintenance to maintain and improve the chemical and mechanical operations of the aquatic facility by assuring precise water chemistry, water temperature and the proper environment for swimming activities. The succesful candidate repairs and maintains pool operations equipment as needed and per preventative maintenance schedule.

Job Functions and Duties for the Pool Operations Specialist, Sr.

Pool Chemistry - 55%
  • Maintains proper swimming pool water chemistry including calibration and adjustment of the chemical dispensers; maintains chlorine, CO2, UV cannons, acid and caustic soda pumps; tests water quality; adds chemicals as needed.
  • Coordinates handling and installation of chemical systems at the Aquatic Center

Equipment Maintenance - 25%
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs aquatic equipment, including pumps, small and large motors, chlorinators, pipes, valves and gauges; back-washes filters, steam valves and exchangers.
  • Installs and replaces pipes, tubing, large and small motors, chemical dispensers and underwater light fixtures.
  • Ensures maintenance of pumps, small and large motors, pipes and valves, pool filtering equipment including water pumps, chemical dispenser systems and chlorine gas chlorinators.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs diving boards, diving towers, fitness equipment, pool vacuum, and other pool related equipment.
  • Supervises, monitors or coordinates the activities of student maintenance staff.

Cleaning - 10%
  • Cleans and maintains pool surfaces and decking.
  • Shovel and remove snow and ice from designated areas such as sidewalks, entryways and roofs as required.

Record Keeping - 5%
  • Maintains records and reports on aquatic equipment to ensure scheduled preventative maintenance.

Other - 5%
  • Performs related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Lifeguard, WSI, certifications.
  • 2 years of pool chemistry experience, general maintenance and repair experience.
  • Certification in CPO and/or AFO.
  • Professional Rescuer CPR certification.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of building and equipment maintenance/repair techniques.
  • Skill in applying building and equipment maintenance/repair technique.
  • Knowledge of water treatment equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge in the practical application of plumbing, electrical and pneumatic repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of the handling of caustic materials, i.e., gas chlorine, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and other related pool chemicals.
  • Knowledge of pool chemistry.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively communicate.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.


Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary starts at $37,584.

Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
