Job Description

The Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech invites applications for several Postdoctoral Associate positions, including one position as the Patricia Ann Caldwell Post-Doctoral Fellow. These are two-year appointments to begin August 10, 2023. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to applicants who identify a Virginia Tech faculty member who will serve as a research mentor and to applicants whose Ph.D.'s were awarded no earlier than August 2020. For a list of faculty research areas and faculty research advisors who can serve as mentors, go to https://www.math.vt.edu/research.html. Applicants in all areas of mathematics will be considered. At least one position will be in algebra. The teaching assignment is one course per semester. Teaching assignments will be confirmed based on instructional needs prior to each semester. The successful candidates will carry out mathematical research in collaboration with faculty members, prepare and publish papers in mathematical research journals, teach one class per semester, present their research at national and international conferences, and, in some cases, help prepare and submit grant proposals with VT PIs.

The Mathematics Department is committed to building an inclusive community of mathematical scientists through programs and activities that are woven into the department’s research, teaching, and outreach efforts. Our commitment is illustrated by programs such as our: Broadening Engagement and Participation in Undergraduate Research; Mathematics: Opportunities in Research and Education; and professional development activities organized by the Virginia Tech Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, winner of the 2021 AWM Student Chapter Award for Scientific Excellence. Through undergraduates’ supervised tutoring of local public school students and through the department’s participation in the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, the Mathematics Department introduces secondary school and community college students to opportunities in the mathematical sciences.

The position is a postdoctoral position that involves research in collaboration with one or more members of the tenure-line Virginia Tech Math faculty and teaching one course per semester. The primary responsibilities of the individual in the position will be to conduct research and publish journal papers on the results of that research. The individual will be also expected to disseminate research results via talks to professional audiences. Assisting tenure-line faculty members with writing grant proposals and grant reports is a possible, but not essential, responsibility.
