Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body to support the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program and the PhD in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and/or School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Research areas for the ideal candidate may include, but are not limited to, computational biology, complex systems biology, applied biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer models and automata theory, ecology, or evolutionary biology, deterministic or stochastic modeling (including in vector/disease/host systems), or organizational biology. Applicants should provide evidence of a track record and strong potential for significant productivity in interdisciplinary research. Externally funded research and upper-level course teaching experience are both considered a plus. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to both academic units, with the majority appointment being determined in consultation with the chairs and the candidate. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an independent research program and actively collaborate in research and grantsmanship with members in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program, the UTRGV Center for Vector-Borne Disease, the Department of Biology and School of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences as well as other faculty at UTRGV and outside the University for impacting the RGV & beyond. The successful candidate will contribute to the BCMB Master's program, the UTRGV PhD program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications, the Biology Master's program, and to developing a planned Biology PhD program. Post-doctoral experience is a plus but not required. Faculty are expected to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities and should have a strong commitment to educate a diverse body of students in a Hispanic-serving institution.



Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in one of the following areas: Biology, Mathematics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or related field with demonstrated potential for research productivity and extramural funding.

Preferred Qualification:
Applicants with industry experience and those with experience teaching upper-level or graduate-level courses in biology, statistics, or mathematics are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have an active research program, experience in teaching a diverse student body, and the ability to use technology and pedagogy to support teaching and learning.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
