Job Summary

The Department of Performing Arts seeks a candidate to serve in a full time teaching (non tenure-track position) in the Music Program. Areas of teaching may include large ensemble direction (instrumental or choral), music theory and aural skills, music appreciation, and songwriting. Specific assignments will be determined by the candidate’s teaching strengths. The responsibilities include up to 27 credits of teaching per academic year, as well as service to the department, college, and university. Teaching load will be spread over nine months of the year during the fall, winter and spring quarters. The College recently completed a 5 year strategic plan - Westphal For All - which is beginning implementation now. Applicants will have the opportunity to work on the many exciting efforts outlined in the plan.

Candidates should have a national, regional or emerging national reputation for their professional work. Their curriculum vitae should demonstrate a track record of creative and scholarly research, and grant activity.

Essential Functions
  • Teach undergraduate courses in the Music Program including, but not limited to large ensemble direction (instrumental or choral), music theory and aural skills, music appreciation, and songwriting.
  • Develop new courses for the Music Program in the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Participate in the program’s curriculum assessment.
  • Mentor students in the music program who demonstrate an eagerness to further their musical education.
  • Continue their professional creative work or scholarship and integrate it into their teaching.
  • Assist in the program’s administration including student recruitment, curriculum development and revisions, course evaluation, and raising awareness of the program’s activities.
  • Serve on committees for the college and university.
  • Maintain involvement in appropriate professional organizations.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in an applicable field.
