Department Summary

The Department of Admissions and Student Recruitment is a dynamic and comprehensive unit that fosters diversity and is driven to shape the future of education. As a unit within Enrollment Management, our mission is to serve the CSUSB community to support student transition from prospect to alumni. We strive for an environment of success for our students and staff. As part of the Coyote Community, the office of Admissions and Student Recruitment works collaboratively with vital stakeholders both on and off campus to ensure that our work remains in alignment with our vision which is being a agent of change by providing access to higher education at CSUSB.


Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Outreach & Student Recruitment, the Native Program Coordinator will contribute to student success by way of participation in high school and college fairs, continuous collaboration and partnership with campus and community partners, and maintain connection with prospective students. This position will be familiar with CRMs, creation of communication plans, and social media engagement. Additionally, this position serves as the liaison between prospective to student and campus resources.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Recruitment
  • Serves as a point of contact for all assigned schools/community colleges.
  • Maintains contact with prospective students, applicants, counselors, and parents regarding the admission and application process.
  • Represents CSUSB at school/community college visits, college nights/fairs, transfer days/fairs as assigned.
  • Responsible for the coordination, development, implementation, and assessment of recruitment events and activities including by not limited to: First Peoples Coyotes Rising, CSUSB Multicultural Day, Preview.
  • Behaves in a manner that promotes goodwill on behalf of the University.
  • Plans visits to schools, schedules and makes presentations, interviews, and follow-up visits. Identifies potential students, and provides information about higher education generally and CSUSB specifically.
  • Plans, manages and implements events to enhance recruitment and yield, including but not limited to, diversity initiative events, mentoring programs, electronic communications, and similar activities.
  • Assesses effectiveness in attracting quality students to CSUSB.
  • Utilizes search and marketing tools and technology.
Partnership Development and Community Outreach
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to native students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus.
Lead Work Direction
  • Lead the work of student assistants to design and develop dynamic programming for incoming Native students. This position will promote the First Peoples Center and raise awareness of Native excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus-wide committees.
  • Oversee programs and leads undergraduate student staff.
  • Provides administrative support, development of sustainable programming directed toward improving student outreach and yield among our Native communities.
  • Creative leadership, strategic planning, and collaboration with campus partners .
Application Review/Advising
  • Makes admissions eligibility determinations using appropriate criteria, including knowledge and experience of records, transcripts, and official documents.
  • Provides admission information and general admission counseling to prospective students and applicants via phone, email, and in person.
Other Duties
  • Develops and monitors program budget to ensure expenditures are appropriate.
  • Assists and lends support to the ongoing assignments of other colleagues within the Admissions & Recruitment office.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

  • Required Qualifications
    • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.

    • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
    • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
    • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
    • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
    • General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures, activities and practices of the program area to which assigned.
    • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
    • General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus.
    • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
    • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
    • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
    • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
    • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
    • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
    • Special consideration will be given to individuals who have worked in Tribal Relations, Native American Student Success or Indigenous Student Affairs.

    • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture.
    • Knowledge and experience working with diverse populations of Native students.
    • Competency in cross-cultural communication.
    • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity and creativity.
    • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.
    • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

    Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,691 per month

    Classification Hiring Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month
