The CA PADs Research Assistant is one of two full-time California based staff of the Syracuse NY Burton Blatt Institute assigned to implement an Evaluation of the Psychiatric Advanced Directives Initiative (PADs) project in Orange County, CA. Under the direct supervision of the Orange County-based PADs Senior Researcher, Research Assistant will assist in conducting the evaluation using semi-structured interviews, surveys, participant observation, and/or focus groups, and report writing as assigned. The Research Assistant will support completion of high quality project deliverables on the timelines identified in the grant award and project work plan. The Research Assistant may work with student research assistants to ensure that the project achieves its deliverables with high quality and within given timelines. The Research Assistant will support the Senior Researcher in ensuring that the evaluation is implemented according to the CA PADs workplan and well- integrated within and complements the activities of the multi-county CA PADs Innovation Project. Qualifications
  • Experience in design and implementation of qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation.
  • Evaluation and research technical skills supplemented by knowledge, experience working with mental health and homelessness systems and services, particularly in the State of California and within Orange County.
  • Experience in implementing complex mixed methods research projects and producing high quality qualitative and quantitative research reports, ensuring that protection of human subjects involved in the research are maintained per established protocols.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience in assisting in the design of surveys, conducting semi-structured interviews, participant observation and/or focus groups and the ability to translate research findings into reports and other materials for multiple audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under general supervision to complete assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Experience with Mac and Windows Operating Systems.

  • Residence within Orange County, CA or within reasonable commuting distance is necessary.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in qualitative and quantitative social sciences research and evaluation preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field may be considered if other position requirements are met. Preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing, supervising, and bringing research and evaluation projects that are focused upon persons with disabilities, inclusive of persons with mental health challenges, to completion.
  • Experience working in mental health and homelessness programs in the State of California can be substituted for up to 2 years of research-related work experience.
Responsibilities
  • Work under the general direction of the Senior Researcher to schedule and conduct interviews, focus groups, surveys, and participant observation that evaluate the project’s effectiveness in meeting its process and outcome goals, according to established protocols.
  • Summarize and synthesize data obtained through interviews, focus groups, surveys, and participant observation, and assist in developing reports and related materials.
  • Assist the Senior Researcher in the evaluating the development, implementation, effectiveness, and accessibility of the technology platform for PADs-related information across 5 CA Counties, including Orange County according to established protocols.
  • Work with, and support student research interns that may be assigned to the project.
  • Other duties as assigned.
