Position Description

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer Voice Teacher position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts ( BFA ) Musical Theatre program, starting fall 2023. They will join a nationally renowned department with a dynamic faculty dedicated to a collaborative and forward-thinking approach to teaching. The Musical Theatre program strives to provide holistic, wellness-based, customized training in musical theater performance with a focus on healthier, more sustainable practices to prepare multi-hyphenate artists for the current professional market. Our mission as a community of artists is to combat and dismantle racism, sexism, ableism, and heteronormative cisgender dominance in the theatre profession and training. We seek to implement these goals in our syllabi, our classrooms, and our stages to break down and disrupt traditional theatre training hierarchies. The ideal candidate is a curious educator with an interest in research and development of innovative practices and pedagogy to educate and support the future of our evolving industry and artform.
Responsibilities include:
  • Delivering weekly 50-minute private voice lessons covering technique for musical theatre, musicianship, and song interpretation.
  • Possibly teaching a musical theatre audition technique or Intro to MT class depending on applicant’s interest/experience.
  • Participating in all aspects of recruitment.
  • Providing vocal notes for several semester productions.
  • Serving the musical theatre program and the department.
  • Staying current with evolving styles, techniques, and pedagogy of musical theatre voice.
  • Certifying in and utilizing One Voice theories and practices in the curriculum (for information on One Voice pedagogy visit www.singonevoice.com )
Required Qualifications
  • Experience teaching musical theatre singing.
  • Knowledge of all styles of musical theatre and pop/rock.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the musical theatre repertoire.
  • Willingness to certify in One Voice vocal pedagogy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with a diverse demographic.
  • Experience teaching voice on the collegiate level.
  • Experience teaching or coaching musical theatre audition technique/performance.
  • Certification and/or Degree in vocal pedagogy or musical theatre performance.
  • Basic piano skills to play vocal exercises
