Department Summary

The Materials Science Institute (MSI) studies the structure and properties of materials, educates in the sciences of materials, and serves Oregon as a resource in these sciences. Since 1985, the MSI has more than tripled the size of its research program, developed four new graduate programs in materials, and contributed to the State's prosperity through collaboration with more than 25 Oregon companies.

The Oregon Pathways to Industry Research Careers (OPIRC) project is a National Science Foundation-funded Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S-STEM) Track 3 project that works with 3 community college (CC) partners (Central Oregon, Lane, and Umpqua CCs) to support student pathways into STEM industry research careers. OPIRC scholarship, mentoring, and advising support begins for students in their final year at their home CC and then follows students through UO baccalaureate programs in Chemistry/Biochemisty and Physics. Students then find support in completing the Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program (KCGIP) which provides specialized training and connects them with paid internships in technical industries throughout the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Current NSF funding extends through 2028.
Position Summary

The Oregon Science Pathways Coordinator will report directly to the OPIRC PI and will serve an essential role in a growing program. Responsibilities will be phased according to individual project calendars of events and activities, but will focus on student scholarship coordination, with duties such as serving as a point of contact for the interpretation and application of complex policies and procedures related to the grant and scholarship; supporting the creation of program cohort and assisting students in navigating the program; coordinating program reporting and web updates; organizing events including Internfest and Duckfest on the UO Campus, events held at the partner Community College campuses, and events to build social cohort (group identity) among OPIRC scholars; and liaising with contacts at partner institutions in support of student and program needs. The person in this position will assist the PI in monitoring and managing program operations and coordinating delivery of services in a manner compliant with institutional and grant policies and procedures. This is a wonderful opportunity for an individual motivated to work directly with students in STEM who is interested in applying administrative skills to help students navigate their futures in the sciences while collaborating and coordinating with a range of campus and community partners.

The Oregon Pathways to Industrial Research Careers (OPIRC) Coordinator will routinely interact with the OPIRC faculty leadership team, UO undergraduate science majors, and students in stakeholder organizations (UO Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program, Lane Community College, Central Oregon Community College, and Umpqua Community College).

The coordinator will be housed with STEM CORE nearby the department offices for Physics and Chemistry & Biochemistry. The position will require the ability to work independently, demonstrate sound judgment, and exercise creative problem-solving skills while providing high-level administrative and business coordination to the OPIRC leadership team.
