Wentworth Institute of Technology is seeking applicants interested in joining the Wentworth community as a Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager.

The Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager is the administrative leader that oversees all laboratory equipment, laboratory spaces, and laboratory support staff within the School of Sciences and Humanities at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of the School of Sciences and Humanities, the Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager will be responsible for approving all laboratory-related expenses and will assist with the yearly operating budget and capital expenditures request for the School.

The Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager will maintain a schedule of all laboratory spaces and assist with developing laboratory space layouts to maximize the use of space in a safe fashion. They will ensure complete compliance with all regulations, safety procedures for laboratories, safety signage, material data sheets, and any other records as required, and will also provide quality and safety standards for all laboratory spaces through proper management and laboratory staff training. The Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager will organize, plan, and lead laboratory continuous improvement activities as required to ensure that laboratory support staff maintain facilities for a safe environment that meets or exceed accreditation standards. Additional responsibility includes working with laboratory support staff to assist faculty in developing laboratory experiments that use existing and new equipment. Moreover, they must develop new and modify policies and procedures for lab operations according to protocols and standards.

The Scientific Demonstration & Laboratory Manager must know both laboratory and management practices, including but not limited to, ensuring that laboratory support staff:
  • support teaching, innovation in lab instruction, community outreach, partnership development, and grant writing;
  • maintain environmental conditions appropriate for the tests performed in each lab and provide an environment safe from physical, chemical, and biological hazards;
  • maintain all laboratory spaces and equipment in compliance with all applicable safety regulations;
  • use and operate with proficiency all of the equipment in their assigned lab spaces;
  • maintain an appropriate schedule for maintenance and functional testing of equipment; maintain material safety data sheets in their assigned lab spaces;
  • train faculty and students on the proper use of the laboratory equipment and proper testing methods as required for safety, accuracy, and reliability;
  • provide procedure and operational manuals for all equipment and ensure that faculty, staff, and students follow the manufacturer’s directions and use as well as upholding laboratory safety practices;
  • Ensure that all safety and security procedures are appropriate and determine any actions that are required beyond existing guidelines;
  • Maintain compliance with facility-mandated chemical inventory and safety requirements, including overseeing the safe handling and use of equipment and materials and the proper disposal of laboratory waste; and
  • Help form new lab safety and compliance committee
