Associate Dean, College of Integrated Science and Engineering

The College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) at James Madison University seeks a dynamic and service-minded colleague and leader for a newly created Associate Dean position. CISE is a vibrant and connected community of faculty, staff and students in applied STEM programs developing creative solutions to critical global challenges like sustainability. With hands-on learning, student-led research and coursework that integrates science and society, CISE works across disciplinary boundaries in forward-looking educational programs. We seek an energetic leader who complements our values of actively promoting inclusion of all CISE community members and nurturing academic excellence in a wide range of academic fields.

Our new Associate Dean will join a collaborative, effective college leadership team of the CISE Dean and existing Associate Dean to advance the mission of the college and its three academic units (Computer Science, Engineering, and the School of Integrated Sciences). The new Associate Dean will hold a range of responsibilities described below; the specific portfolio will be determined according to the successful candidate’s strengths and areas of interest. The position is a tenure-eligible, 12-month instructional faculty position at JMU with the administrative appointment of Associate Dean (https://www.jmu.edu/academic-affairs/_documents/policies/aapolicy-13.pdf).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Flexibility, reliability and aptitude for learning quickly are key characteristics for our new Associate Dean; we do not expect that candidates will have had previous experience in all duties listed below. The CISE Associate Deans report to the Dean, serve as members of the College leadership team, act in an advisory capacity to the Dean, represent the College on University committees and may teach as needed. The duties below will be shared between the existing and new Associate Dean according to the strengths of the new hire.

The successful candidate will work with the College leadership to champion diversity and inclusion initiatives; support curriculum initiatives at undergraduate and graduate levels; implement enrollment, recruitment and marketing strategies; facilitate faculty development and student success programs (e.g., scholarships, academic suspension and probation); facilitate the class scheduling process; oversee College events; manage the building infrastructure; ensure compliance needs are met; and supervise office staff. The Associate Deans provide other services as requested by the Dean.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree and the experience and qualifications appropriate for the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The candidate’s Ph.D. or other terminal degree should be in a field of expertise directly related to at least one of the disciplines represented within the College of Integrated Sciences and Engineering. Candidates with program assessment experience in academic environments and knowledge of current trends in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates will demonstrate their potential for:

  • Providing leadership and supporting the development of effective teams
  • Exhibiting excellent interpersonal communication skills (writing, speaking, listening for understanding, empathy efforts, openness to new ideas)
  • Developing creative solutions with strong attention to detail and organization
