Safety Officers. The Office of Public Safety provides a safe and
secure environment for our campus community. They are responsible
for the general safety of the community, protection of University
property, and the effective operation of the University's
communications base.

Essential functions will include but are not limited to :
- Maintaining high visibility while performing routine patrols on campus (by patrol vehicle and on foot), opening and locking buildings/offices/rooms, directing traffic, and writing traffic violation notices.
- Performing routine safety inspections, responding to service calls, and monitoring the fire alarm system.
- Responds to emergency situations, enforces state and local laws and ordinances, and acts as a liaison to the city police and fire departments.
- Provides safety and crime prevention information to students, staff and faculty, and conducts van & bus driver safe driver certifications.
- Occasionally may need to work the communications base in absence of the operator, answering phone calls, and dispatching public safety officers in response to campus requests.
Qualifications :
- Knowledge: High school diploma or GED required. Knowledge of PBX/multi-line telephone console, radio transmission protocol preferred. Basic computer skills required.
- Experience: Must be at least 21 years old. One year of experience in security or related field and switchboard operation preferred.
- Skills/Aptitude: Excellent communication skills, along with excellent customer service skills required. Must be capable of working with a diverse population and demonstrate composure in all types of situations. The ability to operate a computerized telephone console and manage a moderate volume of phone calls and requests required. Must be self-motivated.
- Working Conditions: Requires physical stamina to patrol on-foot during all types of weather. Duties require extensive walking, climbing stairs, driving a vehicle, and other physical exertion. May require working overtime. May require staying outdoors for long periods of time during adverse weather conditions. This position is designated as Essential and requires the employee to report to work under conditions when the University may be closed for other staff/faculty/students. Must pass a background check, and pass a pre-employment physical exam, and possess a valid driver's license for a minimum of two years.
