Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):

Teach a course for the Smith College Summer Science & Engineering Program for high schoolers (SSEP). Create an academically rigorous 2-week course for students entering 9 th -12 th grade. Provide training and oversight for an undergraduate Classroom Assistant.

This position is temporary and non-benefitted. Salary is a $6500 stipend.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prior to the program:
  • Design a course that is compelling and at the appropriate level for high school students seeking a college-level course and makes use of Smith resources (laboratory facilities, library, Plant House, etc .).

  • Generate a course description, biography, and photo for the website and other marketing.

  • Provide and maintain a budget for course materials.

  • Lead a Classroom Assistant in approximately 25 hours of academic training from June 27-July 1.

  • Participate in faculty orientation and training (3 meetings).

  • Complete all pre-orientation training and paperwork, including training to engage with minors and other paperwork related to working with students under 18.

During the program:
  • Teach one course (16 students; 2 weeks; Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm).

  • ​ Positions teach either Session1 (July 11-23) or Session 2 (July 25-August 6).

  • Use clear, ongoing communication and collaboration with the Classroom Assistant.

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom, keeping equity at the forefront of the pedagogy.

  • Communicate with senior staff about any student classroom concerns.

  • Drive campus vehicles for program field trips, when applicable.

  • Attend the final presentation on the last Friday and Saturday of the session.



After the program:
  • Write recommendations for each student in the class.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Master’s degree in the course’s field and 5+ years of experience teaching high school or college-level classes.

Hiring is contingent on completion of the following pre-program requirements in a timely manner.
  • CORI/SORI criminal check

  • Online child safety training

  • Health profile and required immunizations (all health information is kept confidential)
