The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in integrated urban design engineering (IUDE). We are particularly interested in a civil and environmental systems engineer who connects multiple domains including water, energy, materials and structures, transportation, and the environment to address emerging urban challenges. The ideal candidate will have expertise in systems analysis and data science. Building on this training, the ideal candidate will analyze urban areas to address topics such as infrastructure demand, urban sustainability, and urban resilience in the context of rising inequalities, pollution, population growth, extreme events, and climate change. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) life cycle analysis, large-scale quantitative modeling and simulation of city design, energy systems, urban mobility, and sustainability and resilience. The ideal candidate is expected to use theoretical, computational, and/or experimental approaches and develop a leading interdisciplinary program on integrated urban design and management that proceeds from concept to implementation.

UCI offers an exceptional environment for a successful career in civil and environmental engineering. Outside of CEE, UCI is home to complementary faculty in the fields of natural, social, and information sciences and the collaborative campus environment offers many opportunities for convergent research. The School of Engineering houses several interdisciplinary research centers, including the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP), and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CALIT2). UCI ranked 1st on the New York Times list of Top Colleges Doing the Most for Low-Income Students, 8th on Forbes’ list of Best Value Colleges, and consistently ranks among the top 10 public universities in the U.S.

Located in the heart of diverse Orange County with a population of over 3 million, UCI enjoys the best of what Southern California has to offer: beaches, mountains, deserts, nature preserves, and a broad variety of cultural, entertainment, and intellectual activities. Applicants are expected to have a doctorate from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline by the expected start date of July 1, 2023. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership and innovative thinking toward excellent programs and projects within the department and the university. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, descriptions of research and teaching interests, a statement describing commitment to diversity, and the names and contact information of at least four references.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.
