Job Summary:

The Department of Physics teaches a range of introductory and service courses serving departments across campus, consisting of General Physics courses for major requirements, and breadth courses for majors outside of the STEM field. General Physics course sequences, including algebra-based Phy103/104, calculus-based Phy201/202 (primarily for engineering students), Phy207/208 (primarily for life science students and Physics and Astronomy majors), and Phy247/248/249 (designed for Physics and Astronomy majors), consist of lectures led by instructors, with discussion and laboratory sections led by Teaching Assistants (TAs). Staff course coordinators provide course administration, participate in course development, and serve as instructors along with Physics faculty. Breadth courses include Phy107 Ideas of Modern Physics, Phy109 Physics in the Arts, Phy115 Energy and Climate, and Phy206 Physics of Sports. All courses include lecture demonstrations, in-class technology, course web presence, and assessment of student learning.

This Director of Course Development position will develop and implement introductory and service course enhancements and new course development, including in-person, hybrid, and online, coordinating with instructional staff, support staff, and faculty, while participating in course instruction. It is anticipated that this position will be the instructor of record for at least one lecture section per semester in a state of equilibrium.

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 35% Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
  • 15% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 15% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
  • 20% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 10% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
Ph.D. in physics, physics education, or related field is required.

Qualifications:

Minimum of two years teaching physics or physical science courses at the College level is preferred.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
