    Department Summary

    The department of University Communications is charged with telling the University of Oregon's (UO) stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The department utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the university.
    Position Summary

    The Communications Generalist (Generalist) is responsible for providing communications support to the Office of the Provost (OtP) and several of its units. This position works closely with and is supervised by the Director of Communications for the Office of Provost (Director). Under the guidance of the Director, the Generalist assists with the creation of communications content for print, digital, and other media, and works with stakeholders to help develop and execute communications strategies and tactics to support the provost's priorities and initiatives, and to position the university to succeed and thrive.

    This position provides communications support, coordination, and project management for OtP and related units. This includes writing print and digital content, web content management, e-communications, supporting design, video, and photography projects, and communications assessments. This work regularly requires independent judgment, confidentiality, and in-depth knowledge of the University of Oregon, its programs, personnel, and current issues.
    Minimum Requirements

  • Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization which involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media.
  • At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.

    A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely-related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.
    Professional Competencies

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to write, edit, and create content for print and web publications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and content editing skills.
  • Demonstrated high-functioning organizational skills, including an ability to manage time and projects efficiently in an environment of shifting priorities.
  • Commitment and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment with multiple persons and projects.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience with digital content strategy, information architecture, and analytics.
  • Experience with Drupal, WordPress, or other content management systems.
