Position Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Auxiliary Services the Director of Strategic Events and Conferences leads a cross functional team that oversees the delivery of event strategy and management by providing executive leadership, professional expertise and direction in the strategic planning and execution of Signature Events, Presidential Events and conference services. The Director's portfolio will include presidential and advancement events varying in size and complexity, spanning from individual executive engagements to large university commencements with a focus on cultivating and enhancing meaningful relations hips with targeted, high-level audiences, including prospective donors, corporations and foundations, key business leaders, the Vandal family, influencer s and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related area; or 4 additional years (12 years total) of event leadership and management will substitute for a degree.



8 years of event leadership and management including:

  • Developing and implementing a portfolio of programs, activities, and large-scale projects, which include conceptualizing, coordinate detailed plans, and follow through to meet deadlines.
  • Ensuring events promote or advance a brand and/or support organizational objectives.
  • Managing client and vendor relationships.





Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years working at an academic institution or non-profit environment.
  • Examples of experiential marketing initiatives and the resulting success metrics based on pre-established KPIs.
  • Strong knowledge of event industry standards, best practices, and trends.
  • Experience in fundraising or advancement.
  • Five (5) years of project management experience.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail and meticulous organizational skills.
  • Experience using Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) technology and event management software.
  • Experience in operational efficiency and optimal use of resources; an aptitude for use of data and metrics in decision-making; the ability to plan, monitor, and tightly manage a budget.
  • Maintaining a calm and professional demeanor in a high-stress environment, identifying and independently resolving problems swiftly.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals from all levels of the organization.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:



Required Licensures, Certifications or other
  • Requires occasional travel to regional events.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends in the execution of events.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and ability to meet U of I driving requirements.
