Job Overview
The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music seeks an experienced teacher of musical theatre and Resident Music Director for its celebrated BFA Musical Theatre program to begin in August of 2023. The tenure-track appointment will be at a salary and rank commensurate with credentials within college guidelines.  Initial appointment is three years and the faculty member is then eligible for reappointment. The Department of Musical Theatre is comprised of approximately seventy (70) students, with seven full-time faculty and ten adjunct faculty.  Collaborating with the Department of Theatre Design and Production, the Department of Ensembles and Conducting, and others, the Department of Musical Theatre annually presents at least three musicals, and various other offerings inclusive of new works staged readings, lab shows, cabarets, and concerts.

Essential Functions

  • Teaching undergraduate courses such as Vocal Coaching Levels 1-4 in the BFA program for Musical Theatre, and teaching Assistant Musical Director and Musical Theatre Orchestra courses for the Masters of Music program in Conducting. Act as the Departmental Music Supervisor, Resident Music Director, and will music direct as part of the production season. Advise and mentor students, maintain a vibrant professional, creative and/or scholarly research agenda, and provide ongoing service to the university and profession primarily through committee work. Requires active departmental, divisional and college participation, inclusive of student recruitment, adjudicating performance exams, and season planning. Must actively pursue professional development within their field by attending trainings and conferences, and University-based trainings or conferences, to maintain their fluency with current industry practice and pedagogical advancements while contributing to the forward thinking of the musical theatre cannon. Join the rest of the faculty in the development of curriculum for our increasingly diverse student body including Black, Latinx, Asian/Asian American, and/or Indigenous Native American, LGBTQIA+ theatre/performance, with application of culturally responsive pedagogy.

Minimum Requirements
Prior to the effective date of appointment, must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Music Directing, Musical Theatre or a related field, and a total of four years of experience. Experience must encompass four years of professional experience as a music director as well as two academic years of university level teaching experience in musical theatre, which, can, but need not, be contemporaneous to the professional experience.
